Nice way to spend some time in the woods.:)

When I was a young teenager my brother and I used to cut a lot of pulp wood. We worked on the farm and that was a way of getting spending money. Dad had an old chain saw that ran good when it ran but was hard to start.
One day we cut a pine across a big brush pile so my brother started the saw and cut the saw off and handed it up to me and I tried to start the saw and cranked and cranked, it wouldn't start. My brother said something about the saw being junk and I threw it on the ground from up on the pile.

A few days later dad asked if we wanted to cut a load of pulp wood and said he had everything on the truck. We got there and the two man cross cut saw was on the truck. We cut a cord and 1/4 that day in 5' long pieces with a cross cut saw. Dave It was not a nice way to spend time in the woods, it was just plain long WORK. We NEVER "cussed" dad's saw again that is for sure. Ed

In this short video I show how I use my vintage crosscut saw. A good skill for all homesteaders to acquire.

Nice! I cut some wood with my father back in the early 70's with a saw very similar to that. We moved the peg handle to the end and my dad got on one side and I on the other and we cut and cut and cut and cut..... dad bought an electric chainsaw.

I still have that saw (the cross-cut, not the electric).

Yup, I've a 2 handled cross cut about 6' long and a small one about the same size as the OP shows. I made all my boys learn how to use the crosscut saws and a bow saw before using a chainsaw. I think they appreciate the Stihls more.

USFS smoke jumpers use two man saws for wilderness fire fighting, or at least they did up until the eighties. When you leave the aircraft, the saw would be rolled up like a spring and fastened. When you finally found your saw you had to be real careful unfurling it. I have used them cutting huge old growth and second growth fir in the Cascade mountain range on the Pacific Crest Trail. We weren't allowed to take power saws or the like. That included kerosene, so we used parafin bars for lubrication. We were not good at filing nor setting the teeth and fortunately found a man in Klamath Falls who still had the skill. It takes a lot to file em right and if they aren't, boy, yer up the creek without a paddle.

My Grandpa said him and his dad used to cut 40 crosstie blanks per day. He said he was one happy boy on the 39th one. They also cut their firewood with a cross cut saw or axe. They burned 4 foot long firewood.
