I remember my 1st loan for my 1st brand new car, 65 Corvair. Payment was $69/mon. I paid $1900 and loan was probably a couple hundred less, I was 18yo. Well I turned 19 a few months later and was promptly drafted. I decided to enlist. Being a small town everyone knew. I usually made my payment in person when I cashed my paycheck (I had a job). Next time in the bank, the manager took me in his office. Explained he knew my army pay was barely more than my payment, but not to be concerned as he would work with me if I wanted to keep the car. Some months my payment was a bit short, but I paid it in full and on time in the end. When I was ready for my first house mortgage he couldn't lend, being a commercial bank, but gave me great reference to the S&L.
