I was at sams club this weekend and saw 5g pails of their UTF for either 25 or 29$.. can't remember which.

That's cheaper than TSC.. which is one of the cheapest places I've seen it.. except when walmart has some in stock.

The last time I was in TSC in Westminster, MD I saw Penzoil UTF/Hytrans for $46.59 for a 5 gallon bucket. I didn't catch the price on the cheap stuff.

I use ProMax hydraulic oil and buy it from my fuel supplier where I get my farm diesel. I pay $19 for a 5 gallon bucket and no tax. Walmart, Sams, TSC and Napa are all about $10 more for the same thing.

Isn't UTF Universal Tractor Fluid?

The Pro Max that I use is more for commercial tractors. One contractor I know has a fleet of Deere equipment that's up to 5 or 6 years old and that's all he uses for every thing. Another guy I know has a brand new Cat 315 trackhoe and a D5 that's a few years old. It's also what he uses.

When my hydraulic pump on my dozer went out and I had it rebuilt, the first question they asked before tearing it apart was what fluid I use. When I told them it was Pro Max, they said good, that's not the problem.

There are two cheaper hydraulic fluids that they sell. One for just hydralics and the other for some types of tractors that have certain types of transmissions.

The last I looked, they range in price from $15 to $17

My point was.. I hope it is a utf, and not just a hydraulic oil. UTF fluids have addative packs for extreme pressure gear applications.. like final drives.. etc. Plain hyd oils don't.

And other additives to deal with wet clutch and wet brake systems.

Hydraulic oil is only good for one thing, hydraulic systems. Once you get into common sump systems you need a UTF fluid (for tractors) and in commercial/industrial equipment it's usually a fluid that meets Caterpillar TO-4 and Allison C-4 requirements.

I was just offering an option of where some people might look for the best prices on hydralic oil. Soundguy mentioned a price that he thought was a good price, but what I've found I can get for allot less. The big stores all seem to charge the most money for there fluids, but if you look around, you can save allot of money at other locations.

My farm supply store sells the same Pro Max hydraulic oil that I use for .50 cents more than my farm fuel supplier. He's also two miles further out, so he doesn't sell me any.

The point I'm making is that there are two suppliers that sell the exact same thing almost ten dollars less than all the big chain stores in Tyler.

The point that Diesel power and myself are making is that.. We are wondering if that pro-max hyd fluid is a UTF or not. To me it -sounds- like a plain hyd oil.. and if so,.. is a NO NO in a common sump system.. i.e. useless.. thus i don't even price hyd oils. The prices I mentioned were for utf.

Sure.. I can get R&O hyd oil for 19$ a 5g pail.. but I can't use it.... unless I need some for a floor jack... I need UTF oils..e tc.

Hmm, can't find much info on ProMax online. The only thing I can find is that they are a rerefiner, were a division of Ecogard, INC., which is a subsidiary of Valvoline, that looks to have been bought by Safety Kleen in 1999. So the ProMax line is rerefined oil. Still can't find if the hydraulic oil is just that a hydraulic oil or if it's a utf fluid. Somehow I think if its called a hydraulic oil it's probably just that.
