V519 first service

So the time has come for me to perform the 1st service on my V519.

I stopped at the dealership this afternoon to pick up the supplies. Got oil, oil filter, fuel filter, hydraulic filter, and grease. Tried to get the gear oil and that is where the dealership and I got stumped.

The manual specifies to use p/n 6687120. The parts guy and the service guy both thought it was just 80w 90 but wanted to check to make sure. We couldn't find a definitive answer anywhere. When I asked if they could just order that p/n directly from Bobcat they said yes but I would have to order an entire crate!

Does anyone know anything about 6687120?

Don't know the specs, but it is used in the Toolcat and V417 axles. Hard to believe the dealer doesn't stock it.

Did they check the part numbers for the 1 gallon and 5 gallon containers?

I did a google search and several places sell it.

Yes they checked all of the numbers in an attempt to cross reference to a similar equivalent of the fluid. I spent nearly an hour at the parts desk. It's crazy that there is no specification on what the stuff is.

The hydraulic fluid, oil, and filters are all Bobcat brand. It blows my mind that the gear oil has to be ordered in such a large quantity (like the dealership doesn't have an account setup with them). I may call the dealership in Tulsa and see what they know.

Tulsa has sold a lot of Versahandlers, including my V417 to me.

How many quarts in a crate?

I may have some out in the shop. I will check later to see if it looks like 80w 90.

I'm not sure how many quarts are involved. The parts man made it sound like I could open my on retail shop with one though.

So I found this in the old hydraulic filter last night. Pretty excited about it...

Then as I was replenishing the fluid I was keeping an eye on the sight glass. As soon as I started to think that I was replacing more fluid than what came out, it started overflowing out of the filler neck. I can't tell if the sight glass is completely full or empty.

I started the machine and fully raised and extended the boom. Fluid level at the filler neck remained unchanged. I'm really hoping that the rest of whatever this sponge like material is, isn't lodged somewhere.

Found it, was hoping to tell for sure that it wasn't the same as 80w 90, but can't say it is not.

Removed the lids from each and watching it move in the half empty containers, the viscosity looks about the same.

The bobcat fluid smells a lot different than the gear lube, doesn't have that gear lube stink and is a different color.

That is something I have never seen. Weird looking to say the least.

Can you see the bead in the sight glass?

The fluid level should have gone down drastically when you raised and extended the boom.

This is the new style. With the fluid being so clean I can't tell if it is full or empty...

I ended up sucking some fluid out with a mityvac. I marked the hose from the top of the filler neck to the green portion of that sticker and sucked it out. Still no visible line in the glass. I will be stopping by the dealer to get their thoughts.

Thank you for checking on that fluid for me! Like I said, I may contact Tulsa Bobcat and see what they know or if they can ship it for me.

Go to a John Deere dealer and buy some dye for hydraulic fluid, then you'll be able to see the level.

I suppose it is possible that the input hole to the gauge is plugged with that weird stuff that was in the filter.

How hard is it to get to the mounting nuts?

on the picture where there is shown a hydraulic oil. you need to measure the drop and assembled boom. The oil should be in the green patch.

Well after a ride on the trailer it suddenly showed up in the green area. It looks like the background is actually white and the fluid is yellow. I've only seen it as all yellow so I guess it was over filled to start with.

I went by the dealer and they are supposed to be getting in contact with Bobcat about the mystery material found in the hydraulic filter.

No problem. I have not used any hydraulic attachments yet. They system has been contained since the day I picked it up at the dealership. I still haven't heard anything from them.

Bobcat has changed a lot of part #'s. Bobcat has an online parts look up that might specify but the service manager should know. I go through this often when I need to pick up something that's not real common. My service manager and parts manager will work together because those part #'s change and it gets confusing.

The part number is still good. My dealership just has a problem with ordering it for some reason. Seems to me that this is the product they should be using in the service department instead of whatever off-brand (not genuine bobcat) that they are currently using.

It is NOT 80-90 gear lube it is differential fluid intended for use with wet disc brakes. Use of normal 80 - 90 gear lube will cause swelling and deterioration of the brake discs. Bobcat first stated selling this for use in the Toolcat and Vershandler, both have differentials with wet disc brakes. At that time the label on bottles was marked Differential Fluid. After Bobcat started carrying a tractor line with wet disc brakes the label was changed to Transmission/Differential Fluid to help signify it is also used in the tractor transmission/differential. Part number 6687120 is for the 1 quart bottle shipped from Bobcat Parts in case lots of 12 1 quart bottles (3 gl). There is also 1 gl. bottles shipped 4 per case or 2.5 gallon jug shipped 2 per case and can be purchased in single case lots.
While Bobcat may have fine tuned their recipe of additives to enhance the fluid for use in various applications it is still a premium quality UTF (Universal Tractor Fluid).
