So...I am the proud new owner of a used Valby CH-150 chipper.

Need to find an owners manual - but my web research says this will chip upto a 6 inch log behind 25HP PTO at 540. I have 20 HP at the PTO....so I am wondering does anyone have a Valby and run it at a faster pto speed?

My Hoye manaul says I have 4 PTO speeds - 560, 765, 978, 1163. Wondering if running it at 765 would compensate for the 20 hp at the pto????

thoughts?

Stricly an opinion, but I would think faster pto speed is going to take away from your horsepower. Just throwing a number out there, but I would think pto horsepower might drop a couple at next pto speed. Again, just an opinion.

The faster you run the PTO the less torque you will have, I think 540 would be the best speed. I don't think you'll be able to chip 6" logs with your 20PTO hp but I can't say from experience. That doesn't mean you won't be very happy with it's performance! Did you get the hydro feed option?
Go out and give it a go and see how it works, it can't hurt to try the different speeds and see for yourself what works best.
Just don't forget to let us know! Congrats on your new purchase, I've been eyeing chippers for a long time and hope to get one as well. :)

SD-congrats-Did you buy that Valby from a guy in Southbury by chance? Back in January I exchanged e-mails/calls with this guy who had one listed on Craig's list- I ended up buying a Valby 150 from a guy out by Springfield.

I have a 4720 deere with 50 PTO HP and I doubt this thing will do 6" One of my kids has a 2520 Deere and he has borrowed it and it does a good job on 3" and under stuff with that tractor-which I think is about 22 PTO HP. If you do a search for "Valby 150" on these forums I believe someone has posted the manual.

I started running mine before I totally understood the machine-ended up breaking a belt-So I replaced those- not a fun job- the top pulley weighs about 60 pds and the flywheel is about 220. ended up using the Deere to pick it up enough to get the four belts around the shaft. also had the blades shapened.-see attached. I'm having trouble now however as it won't self feed and if you throw a 4" piece in, it will bang around instead of feeding. I will call the distributor in NYS tomorrow for advice. I believe I have adjusted the blade to anvil clearance to spec but something is not right-

Stay tuned

Thanks Gang.

I bought this in Killingworth Ct for $1200. There was not a tractor on site to test it. :(

I am going to contact the Valby dealer in NYS - I talked to them earlier in the week and they thought they might have a manual they can email me :)

Looks like it wasn't abused but I want to open her up and check it out first...belts, blades, gear oil etc.

Didn't think about the torque issue - I thought if I could get the flywheel spinning faster it might be able to handle everything I throw at it. I burn anything over 3 inches except for the tulip trees we have here...

Oh...FYI - this is not the hydraulic optioned unit....

I would say you got a VERY good deal. the guy in Southbury wanted $2000. The guy I bought mine from wanted 2200, he took 2000. Its faded but other than that, great shape-little use.

For sure, make sure your belt tension is correct. And blade sharpness is important. I'm like you- I'm not spending 4 buck diesel to chip anything I can burn in the stove to avoid buying more 4 buck no. 2 fuel!:)

I finally got a chance to take a look at the chipper. I am missing the tractor side of the PTO shaft. If I need to replace that is there any specs or issues I need to be aware of before I head the 60 miles to tractor supply
