Just to compare some valves. The valves on the PT will leak down, as every one has found out. Put your bucket as high as you can and turn the engine off. Usually by the next day, the bucket is on the ground. It has been said that PT selected these valves for this reason. I have always thought that good quality hydraulic valves should not leak down or very little. I installed a joystick valve on the backhoe that I am building, and raised the boom up in the air, over two weeks ago, it is still in the same position. That says something for those valves. The only way to get around those leaking valves, is by installing check valves. Some of the better valves come with check valves, to hold the cylinder in place.

Yes, I did notice that a lot, this weekend with the tree stump. I had to keep raising it to keep it up in the air, the tilt kept backing off.

I was thinking this was just from running the PT hard, and hot fluid thinning out. Hmmm… I didn't know that was a sign of cheap or low quality valves? I learn something new every day around here. /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

J.J. On my tank it says use only 5W30 motor oil. I am planning to change over to 10W40. Do you think that will slow the valve leak down somewhat, along with giving added wheel motor torque? Will this increase the chance of hydraulic pressure prematurely blowing a hose over time? What say you? /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

JJ--could it be leaking in the cylinders, rather than the valves, that causes this?

Barry,

I'm not sure about the 180s, but PT now recommends 10W40, not 10W30. My tractor's label says one thing, my owners manual says the other...

/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Live a little -- take chances -- put 15W50 or 20W50 synthetic in it. You'll be glad you did! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
