How long would you leave the ATF in it?

Years ago with a carb engine we used to dump about a pint of ATF directly into the carb while the engine was running.( every couple thousand miles if the "train" was noisy)
You had to make sure you kept her running and sure did quiet things up. It lays down a h@ll of a smoke screen while it's burning the ATF.
This was probably more beneficial to the valves as opposed to lifters.
'Never tried it with an injected car.

Oh the clattering! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I had a brand new OLDS Cutlass Supreme in 1995 (3.1L). The car went back several time for the noise and they just told me over and over it is nothing. It always went away after driving a bit. Never got any worse over the 5 years. My wife's '99 Grand am (3.4L) does the same thing (100,000 and still the same).

Believe this.... My '99 Ford Ranger (4.0L) also does it. It is the way of the Future - Piston Slap! Oh you don't have it? I bet you wish you did! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Hmmm, another vote for piston slap. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Methinks that engine flush won't help that! We'll find out after this weekend.

The sound is just like bad lifters. It also comes from the same area, so when I had the OLDS to the dealer, I was convinced it was the lifters. Now that 10 years have passed and all 3 cars I own (have owned) have this issue.... I just turn the radio up when I start the engine (to relieve my stress). As much as the dealers have consoled me... it still makes me cringe to hear it - every day.

So if the motor flush doesn't cure the problem, I take it I should invest in some music cd's of my choice? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hey, as long as it gets my family around in safety and comfort, it's all good.

Update. Motor flush did get some nasties out of the engine, as the oil was pretty dirty when I drained it. However, the noise is still just as loud and annoying. So it sounds like piston slap. I'll just start the car in the morning and go inside until it warms up, I guess. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
