I'd agree with about everything here except using Fram filters. As I've stated here before, I have access to thousands and thousands of breakdown statistics. I really don't see any common denominator with oil, even when people use Walmart house brand oil. However, I have seen hundreds of failures related to the incredibly poor design and quality of Fram oil filters. Since their oil filters are so bad, I won't use anything with the Fram name on it on anything I own. The baseline quality of most any oil that meets the manufacturer's requirements should suffice as long as you also follow the change intervals. An extremely poor quality filter can cause multitudes of problems right from the start. For example, Fram filters generally have the smallest sq. in. filter media, larger micron holes in their filter media, weaker strength filter media, faulty bypass valves, faulty anti-drainback valves and thinner metal in their cans. Documented problems include top end damage from oil draining back, damage from poor filtration, damage from the actual filter element disintegrating, damage from poor oil flow etc., etc.
I won't get into any debate about oils because it is very difficult to pinpoint oil failures from oils that meet the manufacturers recommendations and are changed at proper intervals. I will state with confidence that, without a doubt, there are oil filters out there that are not necessarily better than no filter at all.
