Around here, we'd call that a mouse. How big is it?

Oh, I'm sure it's a pocket gopher. They're about 4-6" long.

Thanks for the link. I'm tending to agree with you. I have more gopher holes than grass in my lawn so I have gophers on the brain. Could be a deer mouse ... it seems to have the bluntest nose of all the mice and voles (meadow mouse).

If a pocket gopher is the same as a vole, I think that may be it. I killed a similar beastie in my garden and was told it was likely a vole.

Reminds me of the high school days of working at McDonald's. I was working the grill and heard one of the girls at the register yell mouse and I came around the corner with the spatula in hand. One good crack and he was dead. Swept him up and threw him in the trash. Took the spatula back to the wash are for detailed sanitation and got a fresh spatula. The manager asked me if I killed a mouse with the spatula. As I was putting the burgers on the sandwiches I grinned and said yep. Her jaw dropped told me to throw the sanwiches away and go home and to take the spatula back to get it washed and sanitized. I grinned again and said I just got this one out. I think the mouse was on his way out anyway as he was moving pretty slow and our store had an excellent track record of cleanliness.

I guess I'm a bit off since I can't derive pleasure from killimg the little fella for nothing more than self gratification.
