Vehicle tires: How many of you guys go Used

/ Vehicle tires: How many of you guys go Used #21
Only used tires I bought are on my tractor hauler.. Everything else has new tires..

All the vehicles get new. I price my tires on the net.

I go to the tire store and see how close they can come to that price.

If they come close, I give them the job.

If they can't come close.. I have a tire machine..I buy on the net and mount them .

I can't afford to buy used tires for my service trucks... Liability reasons

Neither the Pro-Comps nor the Dunlops are that great in the rain. Both howl just as bad, but in the snow I like the Pro-Comps the best. Don't forget these tires are on a 2001 Jeep Wrangler and are aired to 25lbs.

If I can find them cheap enough I will. But most times I can get a new tire for my truck for just a bit more than used.

Sometimes the tires that I replace on my truck with new ones are still good enough for trailer use. So if they are I'll put them on my trailer and wear them on down.

My truck tires are getting ready to be due for replacement soon and I'll probably just buy new ones.

I tried it twice and lost. There are lots of ways for me to save a buck but tires are not one of them. My family's life depends on them.

I maintain about 75 wheeled vehicles and trailers and I now have 2 rules with tires. I will not touch it if they are over 5 Years old and no bias tires.

I'm an automotive enthusiast, which means that I usually buy "interesting" cars with an active aftermarket. Spending all that time on car forums, I noticed that people will often sell their nearly-new wheels and tires when they buy fancier wheels. Often, I can find a set of wheels/tires, mounted and balanced, with a couple thousand miles on them for less than the cost of the tires alone. You can then sell the previous set of wheels (with worn-out tires) for almost the same amount of money! So you buy a set of used wheels with very good tires for $500, then sell your old set with worn-out tires for $400. $100 for an almost new set of tires mounted and balanced.

I've done that with great success with at least a half-dozen sets of wheels/tires.

When I wanted new tires for the pickup truck I just purchased, I did buy new because I wanted a specific kind of tire and I wasn't going to find it used.

Six years around here. Bruce

Same here. They won't touch them but to demount and I agree. Over 6 years old is a ticking time bomb. I know first hand 3 times. Slow learner I guess.

I have ran alot of used tires. Guess I never really paid attention to the date, rather just the overall condition, tread life, and checking.

Funny though, the only tire I ever had blow out was a new one with about 25k miles on it. That was on my last truck, silverado 1500. Trashed the aluminum rim too. So that added another $100+ the cost of a tire

The last set of 4 tires I replaced on my 2001 Ford Ranger were B. F. Goodrich Long Trail T/As, still had a fair amount of tread, but were 6 years and 6 months old and had 51,211 miles on them. And Discount Tire here is the same as you others have said; won't touch them except to demount. So I got 4 new tires. This time I'm trying Kumho tires to see how these cheap tires compare.

In 1959, GM built most of their cars with a suspension that was too soft. So in 1960, I was with my parents, Dad driving in their 1959 Olds, doing about 75 mph when a front tire blew. He had no trouble handling it and slowing down slowly, but the front end of that car sure jumped up and down and trashed a steel wheel. After that, he put Monroe Load Leveller shocks on that car.

I've known of people who supposedly crashed when they blew a tire. Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems to me they would have to be pretty poor drivers. I once had a blowout on a right rear tire on a 1956 Mercury doing over 100 mph and had no problem stopping safely. Then some years later I blew a left front tire doing over 100 mph on a 1966 Chevrolet squad car with no problem controlling it to a safe stop. Both of those were before power steering and disk brakes.

My parents were driving through Death Valley in 1959 with a one year old Rocket 88 Olds and had a tire blow at high speed... lucky there was plenty of smooth desert out there... Mom was driving and never drove fast again and she was not even technically speeding.

I sure hope the tire expire dates to not become a reality... I have over 50 vehicles with 23 insured antique/classic that seldom see even 50 miles in a year... my 68 Mustang Convertible as traveled 231 miles in 7 years... can't currently even buy tires for my 1905 car at the moment... they were only being made in Vietnam...
