There's never a shortage of what I like to call "Jailhouse lawyers". Those are people who "quote" laws that they make up as they go along. One such friend told me one time that it's a violation of Kentucky state law to KNOWINGLY drive off and leave an injured animal laying in a roadway. Who knows if that's correct or not... If it ISN'T, it should be.

The wife and I are "dog nuts" from way back. It find it disgusting that someone could hit a dog (or any other domestic animal) and continue on their merry way.

And a bad situation could have easily been turned into a terrible one. By the sounds of things, you and the girls father are handling things like true gentlemen.

Sometimes all it takes is an admission of fault in a case like this to ease a few minds. It sure would be nice to get the dog back, but that won't happen. At this point, getting everyone to own up to their responsibilities, and assure you that it SHOULDN'T happen again might be about the only satisfaction you can get.

I'm sure the girls father has a heavy heart over his/her involvement too.

You're driving down route 4, outside Springfield IL. A VERY busy, 2 lane road. Speed limit 60. Lots of traffic. A dog runs out in front of you and you hit it. Do you want to risk YOUR life or the life of someone else by stopping to tend to the dog? Dog lover that I am too, I will pass, thank you. And I can't imagine there is any law that would require me to stop in such a situation. If there is, there shouldn't be.

Sorry to hear about your loss. I'm a big time dog lover. I see 2 people at fault here 1) the personthat did the hit and run, 2) the dog owner that let the dog run free. IF you love your animals, please keep them under control. Under control means safe and in sight. This dog should not have been hit, and it certainly should not have laid in the road for 8 hours. I'm sure this will offend some folks, for that I apologize. PLEASE keep your aninmals and kids safe.

FYI, NY state law says the person hitting a domestic animal must stop and try to find the owner.

Totally agree, the owner is more than likely going to be upset at the time just at the thought of loosing the dog, and to what point or good would it be to get back? Loosing a family pet is like loosing someone in the family, (some people don't understand that or don't become that close). I have. Even if the other side doesn't admit it, they still have to live with that fact and know you, and the higher up, are aware of the probability and facts. If it were a human legal circumstances would be different. Sorry to hear of your loss.
