If she is LD to the point that she doesn't "think" that she hit a 145 lb Great Dane, she definitely won't know if she was to hit a small child. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif That's a very scary thought.
Speed bumps are definitely the way to go, IMO.

Ultrarunner,

I was born in Castro Valley, grew up in Hayward and lived in San Leandro before moving to Texas a few years ago. For a time after the Marines, I drove for UPS and Airborne Express through those canyons and hills.

I can tell you for a fact that I've killed more pets than most people by just driving along and they come running out to the road and get under the tires. First time it happend I went to the house and left a note. Nobody was home. The home owner called the company, spoke to my boss and wanted me fired and threatened to sue for what I'd done to their pet.

Lesson learned.

After that I heard stories from other drivers who have had the same thing happen. You just keep going. If it looks like it's suffering, call animal control.

Those roads are very tight, windy and with oncoming traffic, very dangerous. Through a dog or two into the mix, and they are the first to lose.

I've heard of people who have hit dogs go after the dog owner for damage to the car. You said they have a right to drive the road, so if their vehicle is damaged from the animal, are you liable for repairs?

I'm very sorry for your loss, but wonder how that dog got so close to the car in the first place.

Sorry for your loss,
Eddie

I had a friend get ticketed for hitting a dog and not stopping. She thought it was a deer and was shaken up from the ordeal but still received the ticket for not stopping.

You are not reponsible for any medical bills or such but you do have to stop and if there are tags on the animal you have to notify the owner then you can go on your way.

On our private road the Fed Ex and UPS drivers USED TO speed down it!! There is only our home and one other home on the private road. No injuries ever happened but I could see it coming. I talked to the UPS driver and asked him to really slow it down. He is more local, and did slow down a great deal. The Fed Ex driver was some kind of Arab foreigner and didn't seem to understand or care. This Fed Ex driver also tore up some of my property one time too. Anyway, I waited for the next speeding Fed Ex delivery to my neighbors, farther up the private road. I then took matters into my own hands, so to speak, and on his way out of the private road, all of a sudden this Fed Ex driver got TWO flat tires! I was surprised it wasn't four, but I settled for two. Old barbed wire clips on the dirt roads can be a common thing in the country.... if you're not careful!!

As he sat there with two flats, I never said a word, and I never offered help of any kind, which is very unlike me. He kept staring at me and I at him, but nothing was ever said. He got the message apparently, because he now goes rather slow down our private road, keeping children, dogs, calves, etc., safe from his pathetic, unsafe, driving habits!

Kind of like that old story about the 2X4 and the mule!! Sometimes you just have to get their attentiuon and let them understand you are serious!

I am very sorry about your brother's dog!! Being a dog person myself, I can only imagine your pain right now!
