I think it's that way in PA, too. For hitting any domestic animal, but this is only something I've heard and don't know for sure.

Very sorry for your loss, ultrarunner.

Sorry about the loss of your dog, but I've always been a fan of the speed ditch instead of speed bump. You can still go pretty fast across speed bumps, but if you cut a ditch across the road that will slow down not only cars but trucks too.
When I was in college people used to fly across campus even with the speed bumps, but when they added a couple of ditches that slowed them down especially after a few cars busted their front ends up.

Indeed, it may be worth checking state law. Unfortunately, it seems the only way to make a point heard and appreciated by certain folks is to include a punitive financial penalty. $100 out of the daughters pocket just might drive the point home a little harder. Go a little ways toward the cost of speed bimps, or a new puppy too if your bro is so inclined. Sorry for your heartbreak, a very sad story.

Did you mean she was 16 years old or 46 years old? Either way she should know better. She is also lying her --- off. I do not like her. I see no excuse for not at least being positive the animal is not suffering. If you know whose animal it is you should at least tell them if you killed it. You would never expect a neihbor to treat you like that. The deal really sucks. Some lawyers think $100.00 fine is enough punishment but I don't.

The Daughter, suspected driver... because no one actually saw the impact... only her driving away... is 46 and Rudy the Great Dane was 4 1/2. The daughter has a learning disability and lives with her parents.

For better or worse, Rudy's favorite spot was at the roadside mailbox on my property. I also own the "road" in front of the house and my neighbor has an easement for access to their home. Several of my nearest neighbors also own dogs.

Rudy would patiently wait each day for the neighborhood children and the mailman to come by and of course he knew the sound of my brother-in-laws pick-up coming down the lane.

It appears that Rudy was sleeping and the driver did not see him. Another neighbor said he did not hear the car slow, brake or skid. He did hear a loud Thump followed by Rudy wailing and saw a car as it continued up the road.

The tragedy certainly could have been avoided by keeping Rudy locked-up, but then he would not have been able to protect the hens from the foxes or serve as a visual deterent.

My nearest neighbor's twin two-year old grand daughters regulary ride their tricyles in the same spot. Everyone is much more cautious now.

My property is in the city limits and is set-up as horse property. Deed restrictions prohibit any type of fencing except for traditional white rail horse fencing. Permission is possible to construct a small kennel enclosure as long as it cannot be seen.

The previous owner of my home told me he had several altercations with people speeding. Mostly, they were lost, had been drinking or trying to visit a neighbor.

I learned that one altercation led to the police responding because the driver complained the former owner did not have his dog on a leash.

The police came out and said city leash law does not apply to private property and the road was clearly posted as private. Sometimes, city folks have a hard time understanding the concept of Private Property.

I like the suggestion of a speed dip versus a speed bump. I can also understand not stopping if a dog is attacking or chasing you. Neighbors, UPS, Mailman, Meter Reader, etc., have all asked about Rudy. Accidents happen... I just can't imagine not owning-up to it...

We have been overwhelmed by the TBN community... Thank You
