Three ventless fireplaces eh? Wow. I like chimneys to carry away the poison myself

You would be wise to have a chimney if you have vented logs.. He has vent freeeee. No chimney required. They have all the safeties built into the logs & are below 40,000 btu. Of course, you still you have enough air in the room to support combustion vented or not

I dont know the size of the one in the living room but the one in the bedroom (which for all practical purposes, NEVER gets used) is the minimum size they make. Seems there's a limit on what can specifically go into a bedroom. The living room unit...well... the "living room" is about 16x25 and only has 3 walls. The "fourth" wall actually opens up to the dining room which opens up to the kitchen and on the other side of the living room, it opens up to the foyer... point being... it's really dealing with about 1,000 sq/ft floorspace rather than a 'room'. We turn the fans on to help circulate it throughout the house too.

I don't know if any of that enlightens anyone (or if anyone cares :D ) I just thought I'd make mention of it.

"below is copied from ventfree.org"

No bias there I'm sure. Most people will diagree, how about starting a new thread or reviewing the old ones? Anybody burning petroleum inside their house should be aware of the poisonous gasses being produced even if these emmisions are supposedly low according to the people that make the ventfree appliances. Myself, no thanks, I would rather use a vented appliance.

It is certainly up to you if you wish to use vented products in your home, however you are trying to compare the gases of vented with ventless that's apples and oranges.....
Do a search on indoor air quality before you use words like poisonous gases to try and freighten people.

In our day and age do you honestly think our all knowing government would allow the sell of toxic dangerous heaters.......... doubt it.

Hey Midcarolina.... I see you're in Lexington.

My dad's mother in law (and HE is 75  ) lives in Lexington!! I think she's now in a nursing home as she's finally beginning to decline in her health (about a year or two ago)

I came down there several years ago to run a backhoe for him at her house in an area he wanted some stumps dug up. Spent the weekend down there. She's right next to some large lake that is there. (for all I know, the entire town of Lexington is next to that lake!! )

Anyways....just a "hi it's a small world" kinda comment.

Richard,
The older I get, the more I truly believe it is in deed a small world.........

She must be in one of the assisted living facilities near Lake Murray........

If it's been several years since you have been here you prolly wouldnt recognize the area, the entire area has grown leaps and bounds............

Poisonous gasses ?? Come on highbeam. I change my own oil in my cars. Should I be worried that I get oil on my hands that I may get cancer ?? There are alot of poisonous stuff out there to worry about. Vent free gas appliances were designed for max .efficency without health risk to the public. They approved by the american gas association, state & local & national gas codes also allow their installations. They are way ahead of what was used in the past to heat homes with

I hate to get into debates... but, help me understand. Why are these ventlesss heaters outlawed in so many states? Are you trying to tell me that zero, yes, zero carbon monoxide is released by burning a petroleum gas in your home? That's poison by the way. Only a small portion of a percent of this poison is released by cars in their exhaust yet people run their cars in the garage with the door shut to kill themselves. It's one thing to burn them every now and then but as a primary source of heat that's a lot of poison. (I know you guys love it when I call it poison). When you die from CO poisoning you just go to sleep.

Hey, they're still legal in most states and it is a personal decision of course. So you can do what you want with your health. No heads in the sand though.

I'll be honest and admit that I have even burned a kerosene heater in my home and am still alive. I wouldn't let it run all night though. This may just be one of those times when moderation is more important.

If they are so darned safe then why are they outlawed in so many places. Those experts aren't as smart as you guys?

Thanks Kenmac for the reality check. I/we do things all the time that might kill us. They haven't outlawed getting oil on your hands, just these ventless heaters in many places.

You say they are allowed by state codes. Are they now legal in all states?

I've read that some of the real good ones even incorporate a catalytic converter in an effort to burn off the poison before dumping it into your living room.

Hey, you have your source of info and I Have mine:

Ventless Gas Stoves article by Woodstock Soapstone Co.

Where they reiterate that 5 states outlaw these heaters, all of canada eh, and no mobile home in the US may use these ventless things. Poisonous gas, moisture, and oxygen depletion are again referenced.

I have a ventless propane fireplace at my cabin. I have two 100 lb. tanks and only one line running to the fireplace. When a tank runs out of propane, I just unscrew the line from the empty tank and hook it to the full tank. It does take longer for the spark ignitor to relight the pilot, maybe 20 clicks instead of 3-4 clicks normally. This doesn't seem too excessive and isn't all that much of an occasional inconnvenience. I am wondering Richard; how many times do you have to click the ignitor when the line is empty? Maybe I am missing something here.
