I am having a hard time starting a bale. Windrows average sz, hay is dry. The baler belts r very slow at the beginning of the the bale. Taking alot longer to bale a bale. Could it be the belt tension? If so how can I adjust them? Or could it be something other than the belts

Make sure you have all the pickup teeth. On the 504f I'm using now, adjusting (then replacing) the springs on the sides to get the pickup teeth within 2 inches of the starting roller was the trick for me. It would be nothing to plug 1 out of two bale starts. The springs were weak from age and when I ran out of adjustment, I replaced them. Last time I baled, I did 39 rolls in 2.5 hours without a bit of problems.

That gets the starting chamber geometry correct and boy does it work now! Next up is new starting roller belts which seem pretty slick. That should help with the courser Johnson grass on second cut.

Is this a 505MCL baler? If so, the throat clearence is not critical. Draw bar height should be from 13" to 21". If your baler is below serial number 578, be sure that the springs only have 40 coils. Some were shipped with 43 coils and that caused the belts to not turn at bale start. Refer your dealer to SB2008-38.
