Hello All,
I have not received my vertical exhaust kit yet, but it is time for me to decide what height roll-up door I need on my barn addition. Would someone with vertical exhaust on a 4x20 series tractor please give me a measurment from the floor to the top of the exhaust pipe.
Thank you very much,
Jim

I would put the tallest door that will fit it will save you money in the long run. And that is experience talkin.

Have been there and done that, so I have to agree with the above response. I'm currently dealing with this issue again.

Tallest door possible is good advise, however the reason I was asking the question was because the walls have not been constructed yet. There is a BIG difference in the price of a 10' wall and a 12' wall. So I am back to my original question about the height of the vertical exhaust. While I am begging, if it would not be too much trouble for someone, what is the dimension from the ground to the top of the canopy, will probably that to it also.
Thank you,
Jim

The height from ground to the top of the ROPS is 97" and the canopy will add 2 more inches, so I would do a 10'+ door, and don't ask how I know.

Jim,
I started the groundwork for my new shop this afternoon, I have had the building kit for quite some time, bought it with 10' sidewalls. I thought that would be sufficient but man I wish I had gone much taller, for doors in sidewalls you need about 2' over the opening. If I were to start over today I would go 14' sidewalls The best arrangement I have come up with is to build a separate parking building with 8 bay doors and this time the doors will be tall enough to back a trailer in with tractors and backhoes on them. But since this means more money I am forced to go with a gravel floor in the parking garage.

Moral of the story "Do it right the first time"

I've got a Morton building that goes up in December. One 10'x10' door, and one 8-1/2' x 12' door. The extra $$s for the 8.5' door was $250. 12' 4" sidewalls.

Two feet is the clearance that is desirable for a standard door opener. If the installer is good, they can make it work with about 1.5'. There is also a "low clearance" type opener that is specified as needing 1.5' so that you can have a 8 and a half foot door with 10' ceilings.

On my house, the architect screwed up and I didn't catch this: I wanted 8.5' garage doors, but the garage was only a 9' ceiling. Working with the door installer, I got 8' 3" door clearance using 8-1/2' doors with the 9' ceiling. Note this is a 9" extra/track clearance, not the specified 18" extra. I suspect pushing it like this is very door type and installer dependent. The dimensions sited in this thread should show why the 8' 3" door was a win.

So, if you have 10' ceilings consider the 8.5' door and the low clearance (maybe called low lift?) tracks. Doors and tracks might be a bit more, but then that 4000 series tractor will fit.

eepete,
Thanks for the info, in my case the shop has a 4 in 12 roof slope so I will have a 10x12 door on the end wall. Problem is I can't back a trailer in with equipment that may need welding repair or whatever. Also my truck and camper needs a 12 ' door, thats why I said go taller.

hey buddy very exciting building a new shop good for you .we built our shop not long ago and to clear your exhaust you will need a 10 foot door plus what ever header you need above your door (depending on the span of your door and codes in your area) we used scissor trusses to gain some exstra head room in the shop as we had a loft upstairs.hopethis is of some help .remember you can custom cut your exhaust to fit ,if you have a roll bar on your tractor your pipe wil sit lower than that good luck ;)

Thanks to everyone for all the comments and measurments. If I understand things correctly the height of a canopy is 99 inches with zero clearance. If I use a 9' (108") door unless I am missing something it looks like I would be OK. The code in my area requires using 2x6 studs on any wall over 10' and that adds quite a bit to my cost.
Thanks again for everyones help.
