The Sony Handycam CX405 seems like a solid option based on what you're looking for. My parents aren’t big tech users either, and they love how straightforward the Handycam is—it’s lightweight, simple to operate, and the quality is quite good for the price. It’s a nice entry-level camcorder that can capture those special moments with the dogs and wildlife without making things complicated.

If she decides to edit or convert videos, tools like this MXF converter can help make the process smoother, especially if she starts working with different file formats later on. It’s always helpful to have options like these handy. You can check it on Convert MXF Files Online for Free – Movavi

If your wife likes filming outdoors and isn't into smartphones, a Sony Handycam could be a solid choice. They're user-friendly, reliable, and great for capturing quality footage without too much fuss. My cousin uses one for her hiking videos, and it does well with wildlife and scenery too. GoPros are great for action shots but might not be the best fit for everyday outdoor filming since they shine in fast-paced environments.

Biggest problem I have with GoPro is that you are essentially stuck with wide angle views only. Personally I prefer a more zoomed-in view.

Thanks. That's exactly what I got her. Last year. She likes it and it's doing what she wants. It even takes very good single pictures with the zoom.

I should say, this is a great gift idea! For outdoor and wildlife filming, GoPro is super durable and portable, while Sony offers great zoom and clarity. Depends on her style. I found some helpful reviews and deals on Gear Focus. They also have used gear in great shape. maybe someone will also find it helpful.
