Years ago I took my car to Jiffy Lube. When I got home I noticed that they didn't change the oil filter. Even though it was a clear dry day, the filter was covered with mud, road dust, etc. It was obviously the same filter that I went in there with. I haven't been back since.

The 3,000 miles oil change thing is BS too. Just follow the manufacturers service plan. It's usually at least 5,000 miles. On my new car it's 12,500.

Some gas stations had a good scam going years ago when oil used to come in the round cardboard or tin cans. The attendant would offer to check your oil and when he did he would put his finger under the dip stick so when he pushed it in and pulled it out it would show a low oil level. He would go get a quart oil from the shop and when he got back to the car he would have a rag in his hand around the bottom of the can. He would poke the spout in the can and pour it into the engine holding the rag over the bottom of the can. Then he would recheck the oil, this time pushing the stick in all the way so it would show full. What he did was have an empty can that had been opened on the bottom and the rag was hiding the holes. He would charge you for oil you never received.

That's a scam I never heard of, but of course I was working in my dad's service station when oil came in those kind of cans. Our "profit" on a quart of oil was 11 to 12.5 cents. I guess I'd have never thought about anyone running a scam for that amount, but I guess some thieves will try anything, even for small amounts. Once in a while I take my truck to the local Quick Lube and I always stand along side the truck an watch them change the oil. I did catch the guy trying to put in one quart to many once. /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

I have been working at a dealership for over 15 years and every time I see a news story about that it’s a real shame. That happens a lot out there and it really makes us honest places look bad. We also offer the flush products but with the trans being the most popular one, but we always give the customer the choice (filter and fluid change or flush) if a trans service is do. A lot of places will offer a flush when not even needed. We have a strict policy in place to prevent this from happing. There are a lot of good honest techs out there. It really pissis you off when you see someone get charged for work never performed. I too am a victim at a quick lube (buck) place /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
