Vines tangled up in tiller

Too bad there isn't a coulter wheel before the tiller to cut the stuff into manageable pieces, then it would till longer before getting wrapped up in stuff. Really only applies to initial tillage from what I have seen so far, but it is still slow and annoying.

Hi guys, I like the mods shown on here. Does the Howard tiller or any other brand have the factory weed or trash guards? If I buy one, I have to make sure it has these. I use a 4 gang disc for food plots and weeds and vines wrap on it so I’m sure they would do the same on a rotary tiller without those guards....Thx in advance..

I am curious about the country way tiller , i have looked at them and wondered how the quality was. the price is way less than other brands.

My Howards don't get anything wound up on the ends of the rotor shaft, I think they have a better design...

My dad bought the well used Howard tiller over 50 years ago. In all that time since hasn’t needed a repair. They were expensive new and built commercial farming tough. They led the world in rotaryhoe technology. No trash guards required because of their tine design. Interesting historical story. Sadly they went out of business a few years ago so part inventories are shrinking.
My Baltic tiller has similar tines and no trash guards. It’s gear driven from the center. The Howard is chain driven from the end with a two speed gearbox.

Two of my Howards have 4 speed gear boxes, and I find that quite useful at times, all the small things Howard has, makes them work much better than "just a tiller".

One of my Howards has 2,000 plus acres on it, and still has all the original bearings/chain/sprockets and works perfectly, they have paid for themselves many times over!

I'm thinking this Country Way tiller may not wrap stuff around the ends if they hadn't put the guard tabs on at all. The tines cover that area and it doesn't happen anywhere else on the shaft. BUT the cutting edges I added seem to work fine. Since adding those the little bit that does collect can be pulled out in the field rather than spending time cutting at the garage.

Those Howard tillers look pretty beefy and are heavy! I follow the old rule "if you have to ask, you can't afford it". I think I can make do with this cheap tiller I bought just fine.
