That is a great question.

I only know what I was told by the seller.

How could I determine if it is fire clay? What does one look for? I can take more photos if that would help.

How is a fire clay sink made? Is fire clay durable in a kitchen sink application?

I love solving mysteries. I'm open to all comments on this.

Given the OP's comments so far I doubt it is fire-clay, rather an early version of a sink. Think about it...toilets, urinals and bath vanity sinks are still made of what I think is the same material. Dunno when kitchen sinks and bathtubs evolved into a porcelain coating over cast iron (one could probably find the answer by searching for the history of Kohler). Most likely the evolution was for a reason. I bought a house with a modern Kohler kitchen sink and loved it. So when I built this house I installed a Kohler. When it came off the truck I knew my cabinets were not going to be able to handle it. Was more than 100 lbs. of dead load.
