Vinyl Fences

Has anybody had any luck with vinyl split-rail fencing for use in a horse pasture? My wife wants a white fence for the front of our property. I don't want to paint it, so vinyl seems like the natural choice. Part of this front fence will be the front of a proposed pasture where we will keep some horses in the future. The vinyl seems kind of flimsy, but I hate the thought of painting a fence from time to time.

There are some brands of vinyl fence meant for nothing more than to look good. But, there is some specifically made to contain livestock.

Very well put Jon, I've got to know about vinyl fence when buying a house. Very expensive even for show, and I can only imagine what the sturdy stuff costs. Did you think of the vinyl paint, do it once, and it lasts for a bit? Just trying to help. Kent

Just this week the Home Depot flyer in our newspaper had 3 rail (1" x 5"?) white vinyl fence (it didn't look like livestock quality) for $5.01 per lineal foot just for the pieces....installation extra. /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif

My wife had the same idea to put it on both sides of part of our driveway since we have pastures on both sides. I smiled and said O.K., go and measure it (400' total) and price it (we just got a Lowes flyer with it in there, 5x5 posts and 2x6 rails).
After she figured the cost up, she said "I guess the electric fence is fine".
Over $1,200.00 not including tax. If I could afford it, I would like to do it.

I ended up buying the lighter material (cheaper) and then on the 4X4 posts placed the white vinyl sleeves over the wood posts. This gave all the strength I needed plus much cheaper.

The sad thing about vinyl is that (other than the all ready mentioned price), in my opinion, you'll need electric on it anyway to keep the buggers from pushing/cribbing on it. We have some friends that spent about $25,000 on vinyl two years ago or so and they have places to repair all ready.

We decided on tape fencing and t-post covers by horsegaurdfence.com. We've been very happy with the stuff. I tried to send a photo of a bit of our fencing; hope it goes through.

I have been looking into vinyl fencing myself. I checked the web and found numerous suppliers. I e-mailed 3 or 4 of them asking if they were rated to keep horses. All said yes, but most also recommended a hot wire be attached to keep the horses off the fence. I am debating whether to go vinyl or pipe. Both are expensive. I don't want wood. They look beautiful when in good condition, but awful after severely weathered.
