Vinyl gutters?

/ Vinyl gutters? #21
I built my house in 2004 and swore I would never put a gutter on it, I have all kinds of fancy trim, but when the main roof dumps on the low roof the splash is so bad I was having rot issues around my windows in only a couple years, stupid me built a reproduction with fancy pine trim, now that was dumb

Anyhow I put 6" half round copper gutters on, beautiful, costly, and no problem till this year when the gutter on the north side sported a foot of ice, ugh

yup, gutters suck but not having gutters sucks, thankfully our trees are far anough away that I never have to clean them so I guess that 2 months of suck is OK for 10 months of not sucking so bad

Have never seen copper gutters, with the price of copper pipe being what it is, I would be afraid to put copper gutters up even if I could afford them. There are so many stories published about people stripping houses of copper pipe for the scrap value.

It is a problem, not on occupied homes but I've seen churches where they have stolen the leader pipes and gutters, on one church I work on they took a couple pieces of 6" round copper leaders, I forgot exactly how much they cost but it was super expensive, the priest said just replace them with brown aluminum.

New copper looks like money, on the same church they stole fifty feet of new copper gutter off the garage while the priest was asleep in the rectory. I don't know how you rip off 50 feet of gutter without making some noise!

On another church they tried to steal a down spout but the pipe made contact with some electrical wires you could see some burn and arcing occured. No one knows for sure but we hoped the would be thieves got ZZapped.

Too bad it wasn't a bolt of thunder and lightening.

I don't know anything about vinyl gutters, so I can't help there, but I install seamless gutters occasionally on small repair or remodel jobs here. Usually any of the local gutter guys will run what I need on site for a minimul charge, since they will not have an install charge or any kind of responsibility cost for the gutters. If you decide you could install seamless gutters, you might call a few of the local providers to see what they may offer. We have a vinyl siding dealer here who will run seamless gutters at their warehouse for you if the pieces are short enough for you to haul. He has all the fittings for gutters, too. I've hauled gutters up to about 60 feet on my pickup truck by stretching a 20 ft. extension ladder out full length, tying it to my ladder rack, and then tying the gutter to the ladder. We usually stack all the shorter pieces inside the longer pieces for strength, then tie everything to the ladder. Local building suppliers or smaller remodelers or contractors may give you a few names of local installers who will no doubt be much cheaper than the franchise or national chain suppliers. Hope this helps.

Do all the seamless companies use the same gauge metal?

Never mind. Google is our friend. They come in at least .025, .027 and .032 inch thicknesses.

Probably makes a fairly big difference in the $$$$$$.

Is there a specific DIY vinyl brand thats decent? Say better than the average?

I know seamless is the best. My roofer friend echoed the consensus in this thread, however my pocketbook wants something cheaper/.

The only ones I've had any experience with came from Lowe's.

I am a retired carpenter with 32 years of experience in all phases of construction. Read my post #14 about vinyl gutters. IMHO the Genova Severe Weather brand is about the best vinyl gutter for the money, Michigan winters are very severe but I have only had one failure with an inside corner in all that time, and we get a LOT of snow and ice here. I am very happy with the performance of what I purchased. I especially like the rain handling capability of the gutters, we have a huge low slope roof with a steep valley meeting another roof, and the Genova product easily handles all the runoff. I have made other posts here about the need to reinforce the inside corners and add plenty of supports.

Not sure if this helps, but read my signature below...

I don't know if I missed this in the thread, but I have only one big issue against vinyl for quick and easy jobs. My experience with vinyl gutters is that they are all a "system" of matched gutters, joints, and ends. If the box store or supplier quits carrying a particular brand, you may be left high and dry for finding repair parts.

I put up vinyl around a porch I built on one house and they were nearly perfect. If the joints leaked a few drops, it didn't matter. My installation was to keep the water from rushing off the roof and onto my head as I stepped on/off the porch in a rainstorm. The gutters also kept water from eroding a line down the middle of my flower bed. I found the white vinyl is prone to attract dirt because of static buildup, but they are easily cleaned with a long-handled soapy push broom and a garden hose. Never needing paint was a big plus.

Very well stated, I should have mentioned the issue myself...every time I go to Lowes I pick up a connector or two, an end cap, etc. Since the gutters and downspouts themselves are only about $7 a 10 foot length, I have stocked up enough of those to repair the entire house if needed. The only real issue I have had with the solvent welded type of gutter I have, sometimes when you have a break in a component you end up with a headache repairing it, especially when the assembly is in an "L" shape. But by removing the elbows from the drop outlets, you can usually slide quite a length of gutter assembly in the mounting hangars to make repairs.

My bad. I guess i should have mentioned that the nearest Lowes is 8 hours away, and across the border:D

I was unable to find Genova products anywheres even close to local. I did find a product called "Repla K" which seems to be the same design that Genova sells. Just no mention of the Genova brand.
Gutter Manufacturer Gutter Systems Accessories Soffit Fascia Distributor Vinyl Railing Eavestrough

Genova Plumbing, Vinyl Gutters, Vinyl Fencing, Vinyl Decking, Vinyl Railing, Choice Lattice&Vinyl Wire Management Products

I am able to find GSW Euramax in both K and contemporary. These are AKA Rainmaster in the states i believe.

Easy-To-Install Vinyl Gutter Systems Euramax Canada

I am also able to find vinyl half round, by a company whose name i forgot. Any advantage to the half round? You'd think it would be more self cleaning?
