voltage for electric fence?

Just got back from Pa, ran to the tractor store, guy told me every once in a while they get a "bad batch" from the manufacturer.
Stepped it up another notch on the fence controller, measured the voltage on the controller there, and on my fence tester, ran a strong (bright lights) 5,000 volts. Will put it on tommorow, see no problems.
On a side note, anyone live outside (southside on I 81) of Wythfiled (sp?)? Coming down I 81 South this afternoon, there was a BAD pile up/accident on the north side of route100 Hillville exit (I mean pretty bad where you did not want to look). We got there before most of the firetrucks got there, and it was sad. Makes you realize how short life can be.

Well, everythings a go. 5,000 volts around the entire line, dog got it once and he did feel it.
In the future, I'd reccomend that if anyone has an issue with a new electric fence, first thing to do is disconnect the fence controller, plug it into an outlet and check the voltage from the controller to make sure it's putting out what it should, then make sure you don't see a drop on the fence line. Would of saved a lot of headache on my end if I would of done that first.
Funny enough, no where in any of the instructions on the THREE fence controllers that I picked up does it tell you what voltage the controller should be putting out.
