My YM240 has had cranking issues for the past few months. I have had the battery checked and it's good.

I think I have the problem narrowed down the the voltage regulator. I am receiving the same voltage reading with and without the engine running.

Has anyone had a similar problem?

It does sound like the voltage regulator has gone bad.
Or it could be the generator, but not as likely. You can easily remove the gen. and have it tested at a shop.
Since the V.R. costs considerably less, I would change that first.

If you can read 20-30 vdc from the generator, it is good. Whichever is bad, gen. or reg. for a '72 Datsun 510 from your local autoparts store is a direct replacement.

Why would the voltage reg. create cranking problems if the batt. is good? Just asking.

I had a problem cranking my YM2000 and ended up being bad battery cables. If you have the original cables, you should consider changing them.

If the volt. reg. isn't working, use a 1972 datsun 510 reg. My original reg. was showing 18-19 volts (high) and I replaced it with the 510. Works perfect (14.6 volts).

"Why would the voltage reg. create cranking problems if the batt. is good? Just asking."

A bad gen/reg can prevent a good battery from charging in order to provide starting voltage. (Low voltage does not make a battery bad.)

Thought he said the batt. tested "good".

when battery was placed in tractor fully charged the engine starts immediately....however after several hours of use and then several days of non use, the battery is drained and doesn't have enough power to turn engine. This drain, I suspect is due to the fact that the voltage regulator isn't working and the battery isn't being charged during use.

I'm going to pick up the datsun regulator this afternoon as several have suggested. I'll let you know the outcome.

Thanks for the replies.

That's the exact thing my YM2000 was doing. After replacing the batt., it started fine for a couple weeks then was drained. Couldn't figure out was was going on cause the alt. and volt. reg. seemed to be working fine. Decided to change the old batt. cables and wham!!! Started like a racing horse. After several months with no problems, decided I would check the alt. and volt. reg. again. This time the output was 18-19 volts at the battery. Decided the old mech. voltage regulator needed replacing. Used the '72 datsun 510 and works great. No problems to date. Good Luck

Will this 72 Datsun voltage regulator work on a 1601? I have the same problems keeping the battery charged. I know the generator is working.

I don't think so, Hoye lists a different regulator for the 1601 than for the 2000.
