my 186D regulator light is usually lit. It flickers some. I was told it is almost certainly not a defective regulator, because they are very expensive (honest, that is was what the JD parts guy said...) Where should I look, or is there even a problem. I have not noticed any actual problems, like lights flickering, etc.

Mike, if you don't have a volt/ohm meter, you need to get one, (they start at about $10), and check your alternator output at the battery terminals. You should see about +14.5 volts dc at a fast idle. If around 30 volts, bad regulator. If no output, only battery voltage, could be reg. or alt. Unhook regulator and briefly check alternator. If no output, bad alternator. Should see the 30 volts. If no prob., probably bad light. Of course make sure belt and all connections are tight.

Thanks, I think my Fluke will work, I'll check it out

They may want to check the connections at the light.

If you got a Fluke then you probably know all that stuff. They're the best. Mine is a 30 year old Fluke 8020A Multimeter.
