Home PC for now has windows 2000 workstation on it. I can get from this to the laptop, xp pro, but not the other way, which is what I would need to do.

Would I also not have to open a dmz host in my router to the server machine, and use the IP at the router?

thanks

Oh and I could move files as long as I had a way the desktop of the local machine (my docs on start menu).

go to remote machine, copy, go to my docs on local machine, or drop the remote machine into the task bar.

Yea, that sounds right. I figure you know this, but first try pinging the target host and work your way up from there.

Also, WS_FTP is a very good FTP only application. Free to try.

Ok? Back to my earlier post and the previous poster notes too on RDP.

Your Windows 200 box? Is it professional? If so install the RDP
client there.

Configure your XP box to accept RDP requests.

I am confused on your setup. Sorry. Try this configuration locally inside your firewall and DMZ, then move one box to the other side get back at us.

windows 2000 professional on the "server machine". I want to be able to get to this machine from any machine that has internet. Loading RDP, I have tried thru the add remove prog in cp, with my xp and 2000 disc, can not seem to find it. I got RDP working inside the network, from this machine to my laptop which is xp pro, but not the other way.

thanks

Danny,

For what you need, the DMZ options is, well not a very good option! When you set up a computer in the DMZ, it is fully exposed to the internet. In your case it would be much better to open only the ports you need to get FTP and VNC or RDP working. BUT make sure that you have installed all of the patches for your version of Windows and whichever remote control software you want to use. If your IP dosen't change too often then this would work quite good.
Also almost all OS have a built in FTP client so one less thing to install on the other end. Remote Desktop is available on recent version of Windows and Linux so this opens up possibilities and the VNC client is always just a few clicks away if you have internet access. Otherwise the VNC client fits on a floppy disk if I'm not mistaken!
Again it all depends on what you want to do. SSH is also another very good options and it encrypts the data transmitted between both computers. Putty is an SSH client for Windows. You need to install the server portion which in the Windows world certainly exist. I'm using Linux/Unix so all of this is built in. With SSH on two Linux computers I can transfer files, login to the other computer to execute commands and also remotely display the graphical interface on my local computer! It's an all in one solution!

Hope this can help a little /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

There a a ton of remote connection software packages ou there! Just look on the net. XP has a built in one. I have used NetOp and PCAnywhere with great success. I use NetOp almost every day. Works great!

You might want to check with your company and see if this his permitted or possible. Many companies have firewalls that will block this access. If you were I work you would be fired for this.

Agreed. Good point. But ouch! on your companies policy.
How about a security review on the policy and technology? These types of access can be made *very* secured and may give your business the edge it needs to compete.

I say make a little noise on the subject! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

This will not be done from my company, it is for me to use in the field, from client computers (reasonfor not wanting to use software, just internet). My company IT dept is seperate from what I work on.
