I have an EMS brand composite type jacket that has inner and outer shells and a bunch of zippers that allow insertion of over/under layers. Also some snowboarder, 'knuckledraggers' employ zip out/zip in layers and snapped apron like cuffs to attach snow pants too. Places in Europe and elsewhere have been employing zippers longer than the US has existed. We're NOT the World's standard for everything....

Truth be told, I just checked two of my zip-up jackets... one 'pull' is on the right and the other is on the left.

Neither specifically says that it's a ladies or gentleman's garment. Unless the garment comes from some 'Women's Only' boutique, then either/or is perfectly acceptable (and your lovely wife is WRONG).

I, of course, am secure in my masculinity and will wear the zip on either side; happy in the knowledge that the zipper actually works! It's amazing... one way (up) and two sides go into this pull 'thingy' and come out joined. The other direction (down) and the joined sides become two sides again!

It's right up there with the miracle of a "Thermos"!!! Hot stuff goes in and it stays hot. Cold stuff goes in and it stays cold. HOW DOES IT KNOW!?! :confused3:

Wag tail the Chinese "Thermos" uses a different principle. Put in Hot and it turns cool. and pour in cold will return warm .
But cost less so why it is purchased.

Based on your knowledge of the history of the zipper, you should correct the information contained in Zipper - Wikipedia.

That item must be mistaken because, contrary to your statement, it reports the zipper "evolved" in the US, beginning in the 1800s.

Just a little bit of trivia although I can't find a link, a popular item of clothing here is the pants made by R M Williams, popular with farmers and stockmen because of their rugged nature and can be quite smart (when clean), the pants come with a zipper or a button up fly.
R M Williams reasoned that stockmen and shearers could not replace and sew in a zipper but could replace a button if it came off, the tradition continues although button up fly are hard to find, probably in more rural areas than ours they are readily available.
Very hard wearing and come in different weights, I made the mistake of buying the heavy material and felt like my pants were made of tarpaulin material and took a couple of years to soften up a bit.
I still have them somewhere but rarely wear them as I feel like I am walking like a puppet.

Good ole Levi's 501s are still button up fly. I have a few pairs in various states of condition. I don't mind them... but if have an injured pointer finger, they can be a *****! Yes, I cut my finger badly a few nights ago, cooking. My wife doesn't understand why I am running around without my pants on. I tell you this though... I am not getting anywhere.
