Wait for ambulance or Go on your on?

- Keep clear access to your home/property for a big rig or concrete truck(Fire Engine size)

There is a house near us that has a driveway that has become overgrown. Years ago I wondered why they kept parking one of their cars at the end of the driveway. The car can get up the driveway but a large truck aka fire engine, ambulance or the all important bottle water truck cannot. :confused2:

One morning I saw why they park the car at the end of the driveway. The bottle water truck could not or would not go up the driveway. So they leave their car near the road so the bottled water can be put in the trunk so they can easily get the jugs to the house. I think they leave the car open so the truck driver can put the jugs in the car. :confused2:

Our county requires new construction to have the house numbers clearly marked. Which we had to do on the gate on the road since one cannot see our house from the road. Much less from the gate in the road. :D We would like to put up a gate operator but it never gets high on the priority list. The gate has to stay in place because of all of the traffic and trash we get when the gate is open. No gate would be even worse. Thankfully we never had to call an ambulance to the house. But if we do we will let dispatch know the combination, they can cut the chain or someone can open the gate.

A gate operator would be nice but it seems TBNers have not had good luck with the affordable models. And our wood gate posts do move with the seasons so I am not sure how well the operator would work throughout the year. There also is no power by the gate so that requires a solar cell and battery which is even more money I don't want to spend. :D

So we keep the current gate operator. The Wife. The gate operator was not happy yesterday when we stopped at the gate, I pointed my finger at her and went buzz buzz pretending to push the button on a gate key fob.:D

The gate operator did a great job. Not cheap though. :D:laughing::thumbsup:

great advise so far on the LARGE reflective numbers. You might save a neighbors life, not just your own. LOL this is a case of do as I say not as I do. My house is in the middle of our small town, I probably havent painted the mailbox is 15 years. there are some faded silver numbers on the front door. but I am the fire chief, the guys BETTER know where my house is !!! I think i will repaint and number the mail box this weekend, and go by my parents house and double check theirs.

It was tragic about that poor fellow. It seems everything and every choice he made was wrong.

When I first moved to my house 5 years ago, I scouted out nearest medical facilities and hours of operation, and advised my wife which I thought she should use and at what times.

I guess that lets you know how I feel about waiting for an ambulance. I have heard too many horror stories about waiting for help. So my vote is pack up, and get to the medical help fast. If you have time, call local law enforcement and advise circumstances and ask them to assist with escort to where you are going.

A side note though. I have spent considerable time in the emergency waiting room waiting for help. So even though you may get there fast, you may get no medical help.

LOL....and you'd better hope they want to KEEP you as chief! :)

You can read them at 45 MPH in time to stop and make the turn.

Can't do 45 on our road. But you do make an excellent point about readable address numbers.

Finally, (and yeah this is controversial) think about if you really need a locked gate at your driveway. It takes time to disassemble them. What's more likely to harm you, bad guys randomly coming down the driveway or having a 5 minute delay while the ambulance waits for the fire department to take the gate apart. Around here, we disassemble not cut. Too many false alarms where we get chewed out, person makes a stink, we have to pay to put it together. Yeah, it's idiot homeowners causing idiot people in charge to cave in, but that's where we are. Only thing we'll cut is a chain where the home owner clearly left a bunch of extra links on one end such that cutting a link is a zero repair event. With the linear actuator gates, all you can do is take them apart.

A little off the topic, but if you choose the "wait for ambulance" option it's important.

Pete

I'm cheating with my gate. I'm installing an opticom detector which will open both gates in the event of an emergency vehicle pulling into the driveway.

Fourteen years ago, we were camping in the mountains west of Ely, Navada. It was Labor Day morning and our son rolled of the counter in our trailer while my wife was changing him. He landed on his head was wouldn't stop crying. We were getting ready to go caving for the day and didn't want to be underground with out having him checked out first. I figured he would be fine, but it isn't worth taking chances. The only thing in town that I knew where it was, was the Sheriffs Department so we drove down to the Sheriff, told them what happened, and asked where the hospital was. They asked if we would like a police escort. (I think they were bored) Anyway, when we got to the hospital, the emergency room door was unlocked, but all the lights were off and no-one seemed to be around. We turned on the lights and started wandering around calling if anyone was there. We eventually found the on-duty doctor in another room watching TV after a few minutes.

It was kinda weird for us comming from a larger city where the ER has patients in the waiting room 24/7.

Cyril, if you have an opticom dector for you gate you _are_ the man

Dan, a chain locking a gate is not a problem. Easy to cut. Just have a few extra links so everyone is happy. As long as you don't pretend your gate key fob has a mute button, you should be good to go . BTW, next time your in Burlington talking with Joe, ask about the picture on his door... ;)

I built traffic signals for 26 years and desposal of the old stuff was my responsibility as the forman. I have several detectors and a couple of descriminators, as well as an old cabint which I am retrofitting for my gate controls. I also have several detection loop amps and a video detection card for the cabinet.

For the last five years, I've worked for a local city repairing traffic signals. My current title is an ITS Traffic Signal Technician. My duties, as well as repair and maintainance, include building an IP based fiberoptic network for the new communications system for the 182 traffic signals we have.
