From a geopolitical view, China needs to pay a harsh penalty for this.
You can point all the political fingers you want at who did what wrong here to score political points, but look at all the countries affected by this.....
Some countries responses and limitations on fatalities will score better than others, but there’s so many variables that can “weight” the deaths per 100k one way or another.
At the end of the day, China released the contagion and delayed the fact of H to H transmission for several weeks thereby cutting off response at the knees for the rest of the world. They also hoarded PPE and blamed the US like a child caught with a hand in the cookie jar.
At a minimum, compensation is required. If they had any moral character or regards for human life, their scientists should produce a vaccine (if they can) and provide it for free to the entire world or until is it wiped out of existence.
If they cannot, other countries need to hold them accountable for their wrongdoing.

While they could perhaps have handled it differently I don't think that's a precedent we want/need to set. Holding one country liable for an act of God can easily come back to bite us in the backside.
