I have had an Ariens for two seasons now and have discovered that I had to modify the wheels to use it to trim around the pond and other spots. The wheels as they come create very little ground clearance and on uneven ground are a complete PITA. By redrilling the mounting holes I gained about four inches and that works much better. My next move is to get larger diameter wheels. I bought the machine for $150 lightly used -- so fooling around with it a little is no big deal.
I have tried various string in it a found that they all tend to perform around the same -- if you hit rock or metal it does not last long -- vetch will plug the head and stop the machine if you do not cut in small doses.
