I went in to TSC today and took a look at the Swisher, looks like a nice unit. It appears changing out trimmer lines couldn't be any easier.

:confused3:1/2" PVC 20" long, string 18" lonf, PVC mounted with hose clamps, cannot be taken off to dump string out. How do you get the string out of the PVC? Am I missing something, or misunderstanding something?

Hopefully if I don,t stuff to many strings in the pipe I can take the bottom cap off and slide one out as needed.Let the testing begin,LOL.

Coobie I tie-wrapped an old rubber hose with the bottom end plugged onto the handle of the trimmer. I made the hose a couple of inches shorter than the length of the pre-cut trimmer lines. This way they are convenient to access from the top and the rubber hose offers enough resistance to prevent them from bouncing out as it is not slick inside an not perfectly straight like the pvc will be either.

I have the Swisher trimmer as well and its worked like a beast for 5 years now. I always make sure to treat the gas in the Summer and completely run it out of gas (and remove float bowl) in the winter. So far so good. My only issue has been the housing around the belt broke off in the first year. The unit looks pretty bad but it still cuts like a demon.

I keep my pre-cut strings in a capped PVC pipe on the handlebars, too, but the strings stick out about 1/4 inch and I keep the pipe full of water.

Another idea is to make a type of quiver like device much like you would use in archery that would hang from the handlebars. Should keep the strings from falling out if it is hanging versus fixed. It could be rigid (like the pvc idea) or some sort of leather or canvas or something.

My first thought was that Coobie might have his numbers backward; i.e., an 18" PVC with 30" string so you could easily grab another string at the top of the PVC.

i keep a plastic quiver too, with caps. nothing can fall out. easy to add water too. held on with zip ties. a 1" pipe holds enough string for many many hours of cutting.. much mor ethan the gas tank or I can take.

mine is cut so that only the top 3/8 inch of string hangs out. thus i can push a compression cap over and seal it.... yet still grab strings out with fingers / no tools

Of course this thread is about walk behind string trimmers. I spent an hour and a half, and just a little more than one tank of gas, this morning with my Stihl string trimmer, and wished most of that time, that I still had my DR walk behind trimmer. The only reason I have the Stihl instead is because I use it as an edger also. However, I have the edger attachment, that's almost never used, for my Mantis tiller now, so if I had to buy another trimmer, it would be a DR.

The Mantis tiller. Now that's one wicked tool!!! I just love mine, and am always looking for an excuse to fire mine up.

Dean, it appears that you might have about the same model I have. Actually, I bought it more for the dethatcher (power rake) than anything, but it's done a little tilling and a little edging in addition to quite a bit of dethatching. It's another of those things that I would not have bought if it hadn't been for their money back guarantee. And I got it a little cheaper by ordering a refurbished one. I don't guess they have too many returned because they didn't have a refurbished one at the time; had to wait awhile to get one, and when it arrived, it sure "looked" new. Another couple of weeks will be 7 years that I've had it.

Coobie, I've got the old 2 stroke machine and I'm happy with it, but if I were going to buy a new one today, I'm sure I'd want the Honda 4 stroke.

Sorry I'm late… I have a DR walk behind and I really like it. Chops the S#$%$#^ out of everything. I have tube mounted to keep extra strings but I only put a couple in there if I'm going to be a ways from the house. I keep all my strings in a zip-lock bag wrapped on a bunch of soaking wet paper towels. Makes and keeps them very ply-able.
