walking steep metal building roof

I've only had shingle roofs but the last 2 homes were too steep to walk up. One of my extension ladders is an old type III 20 footer. With the ladder fully extended, I drilled a hole on each side and bolted it to lock the sections together. Then at the top I attached a small rigid caster on each side. On the opposite side of the casters I mounted one of those aluminum stabilizers I bought years ago. Using another ladder at the gutter line I would roll this ladder up so the stabilizer is just past the peak and then just flip it over. It's worked well many times to get me up and down the roof safely.

I got a climbing harness at REI and have static rope (climbing grade) for life lines for all my tree stands so I used the remaining long part of the purchased rope to work with on the roof. I hooked to the tow hooks on my truck, or a tree, when doing the roof on the shed and it saved my bacon twice. The first slip was due to the seeds the pine trees were kicking out, the second was due to a microburst of rain that lasted just long enough to lube the tin.

I won't do a steel roof without anti-gravity defensive measures. I don't bounce like I used to.

4/12 pitch on my garage roof I just built. Wasnt bad to work on, but wouldnt want to be up there when its wet, or dew on in the morning.

Anything more than 4/12....would suck. My old shop I went 6/12. Was able to put all the sheets up without actually getting on them, Just reaching across their 3' width while resting comfortably on the truss/purlins.

when it came to the end sheet, I tied off at the ridge with a rope. After all the sheets were on, the only thing left was the ridge, which wasnt bad just walking down the peak as long as a shoe was on a screw head and you kept 1 foot on either side of the ridge.

Never went back up on that roof. But if I had to, at 6/12 I would have done something to prevent sliding off

I have a 6/12 metal roof on our home. I also have two wood stove chimneys that need annual creosote clean out. We've been in the house five years now. The first year just used a tall extension ladder and tried to walk in the roof with soft gummy rubber soled shoes. Got it done but spooked the crap out of me. Did I mention that I'm afraid of heights? Do not let that fear stop me, but it does not get any easier. Second year went with the old rope tied to tree on the opposite side of the house. That worked better, but still slipped and slid more than once. Third year had a brain fart and attached two inch angle iron steps with extra long roofing screws. The steps are two feet long and have five heavy screws in each. Put the steps eighteen inches apart. put five of them below the chimneys, and one above. Painted them before putting them up, and used a good silicone caulk to seal the screw holed. Still use the rope and harness, but more of precaution now.

I bought one of these when I found a 50' manlift on CL -

Werner Roofing Safety System-K21121 - The Home Depot

Wasn't any more expensive than just getting a harness and lanyard, and it's all together in a conspicuous green bucket :D

Haven't used the rope and anchor yet, but it's there if/when I need it. All my roofs are only 4/12, but nearing 71 this May I'm pretty sure "bouncing" has been replaced with one SPLAT followed by a short but pathetic death rattle  ...Steve

Shop has 6/12 steel roof, my neighbor has a safety harness, it's not very comfortable to wear but I won't go up there without it. It's still very scary near the edge. I was a lot braver and a whole lot dumber when I was young, I used to go up there without a harness, didn't seem so scary then.
