Hey Iron Brew, If you want to try out your new winch bring it on over to my place, I broke my Farmi yesterday, the winch is about 34 years old and this is the first repair i am making tomorrow other than cable repairs. The drive chain to the clutch broke and i just got a new chain this afternoon. Once you get the feel for this machine you will wonder how you lived without it. Good Luck and be EXTREMELY careful when winching the cable in, if it breakes it can kill you. Before you use it make sure the cable clamps are all tight at the end of the cable if there is any and double clamps are a good idea. Just a thought .. . John

Yup, never saddle a dead horse... I have some fraying on the end to deal with (any suggestions? Never whipped wire rope... thinking of wrapped with electrical tape, filled with glue (gluestick) then heatshrink...)

My cable is always fraying on the end where the grab hook is. I don't even think twice now, I just cut it off but before, i hit it with the MIG welder to keep it from fraying then cut it and double clamp it!

That is really cool! Where do you get something like that? Is that the only MFG for these things? I have never seen anything like that.

As far as MFGs Farmi, Wallenstein, Norse, Uniforest, Fransgard. 3 Rivers Forestry handles Farmi, along with other places.

Would torch, flux & solder work?

I chose the Wallenstein for a few basic reasons... price, ease of accessability (local dealer) and north American made (Canadian) so parts etc. should not be an issue.

It might. I'd kinda like to whip it with some sort of wire if I could first though.

I've heard od wrapping the frayed end of a wire rope with stainless steel safety wire, then soldering. I've no idea how well this works though.

We were taught how to whip the ends of wire rope when I was in the Navy...but can't recall the procedure. One thing you could do is swage a barrel ftting at the end of the wire rope, if you have the equipment or means to do so.

OK. One (short) day of using the winch. Overall impressions are "great". Reduces my towing capacity, however allows me to gather the wood MUCH faster, for a great gain in time savings.

The bad - It is definitely not "standard" Cat measurements. I had to remove my quick hitch.

- There is a lack of attachment points - meaning I have to load the chokers into the bucket etc. instead of onto the winch. I'll probably rectify this using the guard. I'll also be adding something so the chainsaw can be hung on the winch.

Quality is great, and the manual is quite impressive. PTO supplied is very long (9" longer than I could use, so had to cut it down).

I made the chokers myself, using cheap transport grade 70 chain. I discovered this was much cheaper at an industrial supplier (Greggs Distributing) than at the local discount emporium (Princess Auto). The choker hooks came from Labonville, and were a great price. They were shipped in such a manner that I did NOT have to pay the brown van ripoff brokerage fees (yes, UPS loses American business a LOT of Canadian orders).

I also got to try out my new self releasing snatch block. It worked very well, other than 2 small 1D10T operator errors. Unless I forget, these are easy to avoid (basically the cable slipped out of the pully and kicked the release).

I'll get some more pictures on my next days off of the home made chokers and the self releasing snatch block.

I'll try to get action shots next days off (a week or so).

EDIT - Why do my pictures rotate 90 degrees?

You can try two things:
Hold the camera upright for a Portrait orientation and post a test picture (you can always delete the test post)
or
Since you know taking a picture in Landscape seems to result in a picture rotated 90 degrees, use you photo/image program to rotate the pics 90 degrees clockwise before uploading them. That may work. Again, try a test post.

It has to do with the EXIF data / information that is saved when the photo was taken. Your computer "knows" that it was taken sideways and rotates it for you. I'm guessing TBN's photo program doesn't not translate that information. You may have to "re-save" the file in the upright format.

My graphics program, shows me that the photo was originally taken sideways... but display them correctly (with a icon at the bottom left of the photo).

In the first photo below, I re-saved the first one as upright already - the second one has a little blue icon with two arrows... that is in the original format.

PS. Very nice piece of equipment... on my wish list but I might have to live without :(
