My main concern is that.....it might bend a bit with use...then the holes.....may not line up well enough to get the pin inserted.

The BroTek wouldn't have that problem because it constanty adjusts with the turnbuckling link. The BroTek, on the other hand, seems less beefy and doesn't have those nice teeth that the Wallenstein has.

This will become the "Wallenstein vs. Bro-Tek" issue. Because the Bro-Tek is more 'linear', it doesn't look like it will have the same torsional stresses as the Wallenstein unit will have. I believe for this reason the Bro-Tek unit is a bit more structurally more sound and probably capable of handling more "brute force" (picking up an irregular rock, for example) without folding or deforming.

For every up, there is a down. The Wallenstein unit looks SO MEAN and heavy. And the wider, more "engaging" grip would make better suited to timber and brush. My fear with the Wallenstein unit is if you grip too hard on one side of the teeth and invoke a huge torsional stress, that it will deform.

I certainly hope not, though. I have purchased a Wallenstein thumb for my Woods BH6000. It just looks so pretty. Should have the thumb on Monday and my dealer should be picking my tractor up for the BH installation next week. When I get it all back, I will be eager to evaluate.

And, of course, post pictures.

Interesting comments on the two "thumbs." I have GL4330 with a BH 90 hoe and am interested in a thumb. Yes, I could fabricate one, but there is no need to invent if someone has done it right, already. I tried to find out if the Wallenstein is available in my size, but no luck. I gave the project to my dealer to price both. If these units are light for a BH 90 are there any recommendations for others?

take care,
Bill

If you have a question about the Wallenstein, you can call Josh Ahern at Ahern Equipment 508-885-7085. His phone is available through their e-bay listings.

Bro-Tek responds very quickly to an e-mail you send through their web site. It sounds like the guy fabricates each one from templates. I was talking to him about a custom ripper tooth and it sounded like he could make it pretty much whatever I wanted...perhaps the same is true with their thumb.

If you mean BH90 as a large BH, I don't think the thumbs in this discussion will fit the bill. These are smaller units for the BX. But I'm not sure if either company makes larger units...never checked...

I sure do have one for the BH90, in stock.

I did not want to jump into any fight, but to let everyone know that I've sold over 100 Thumbs for the BX over the past year.

I never had a call back, this should take away any douths one how reliable they are.

I'll let the 100 or so BX customers fill in their feedback, on this forum.

Thanks everyone for their support.

Richard:

We all appreciate your contributions to our BX world. To be clear: I don't think anyone has "knocked" your thumb in the least. As I said earlier, it is probably the more "sound" of the two, but it depends on what you're using it for. Personally, I plan moving wood and brush and don't have many rocks. I actually consider it a 'risky buy' to get a different thumb than your unit without feedback from others on its durability. I will say that 92% of my purchase was my wife's input.

I look forward to getting skidplates from you and having a ripper tooth made for my BH6000...there is one custom touch I'd like to add.

Again, I'd like to express my (personal) appreciation for your support and the availability of your products. And reiterate that nobody in this forum doubts the durability of your thumb. I think folks in this forum generally share my sentiment. If they don't, I know they'll speak up. Guaranteed. If there is no shortage of anything in this forum, it is speaking up.

Best regards,

Keith

HEY GUYS,
No matter which thumb you buy or make, ill be one to say your crazy not to put one on your bx.They are the best addition you can do to your tractor in my opinion.Try to get one that has an adjustment,or different pin holes for the different angles,it is nice to be able to still dig a hole, and pick the rocks out as you go.Another reason for the thumb is it saves on your dipperstick from getting beat up,trying to pinch things to pick them up.

Keith,

Your post above (#22 in this thread), really well defined the pros and cons between these two. Very articulate, nice job.

I wonder what the bh would look like with Bro-Tek's ripper on the end (in lieu of bucket) and thumb extended at same time, maybe a little like a crab or lobster claw. I'm trying to think of what specific applications I could put this little (pincher/pincer sp??) up against. Hmmmm (Isn't it great to be blessed with the mechanical imagination of a male? Tee Hee Hee)

Well that sounds like fun. Like some freaky bionic arm. Don't know what the heck you'd try to pick up with that, but it sounds like a pretty cool picture, anyway.

Was thinking of what I could crimp with it. Maybe corrugated culvert pipe that has been bent on the end and needs to be brought back to round?? And then my wife has this bratty black cat that always chews things up and marks whatever he feels like in the house---already had been thinkin' of how to really "put the squeeze" on that little sucker........
