Fishman,
The cap isn't the only small thing that could cause your problem but it is a commonly overlooked and cheap part. Plus I have seen them bad many times on less than new cars.

You may want to check small things like hose connections, including heater hoses, and heater control valve. You may want to pressure test the system.

as far as the oil sample goes I would expect it to be good. THIS UNFORTUNATELY DOES NOT RULE OUT A BAD HEAD GASKET.
head gaskets can leak many ways.

1 oil can leak out externally and not effect combustion or coolant.
2 coolant can leak out externally and not effect combustion or oil.
(in both of these cases the combustion chamber seal is not affected)
3 oil in coolant or coolant in oil is head gasket bad between oil galley and coolant port.
4 If the gasket is blown at the cylinder wall you will most likely see an over heating condition or coolant system over pressurized, or if it is small enough you can use a CO detector to check for the presence of combustion gasses in the coolant.

aluminum head and cast block requires more attention to coolant services even if the gasket was designed correctly (dissimilar metals). Some of the head gaskets used a few years back were poor.

WOW, did blackstone go up! For that price blackstone is out. I will stay with OAI for about $18 and get the TBN for FREE!

My dodge 1500 with the 5.9lv8 was using a tad bit of coolant. Not much.. but enough that my mechanic would note it. System pressure tested ok, and no coolant was making it into the oil, and no obvious leaks. Water pump eventually went out, and we think we found the coolant leak. the water pump on that dodge uses a pipe and oring for water passage.. that union leaked enough to loose coolant in a couple months.. but not enough to drip or make a wet spot.. it more or less evaporated quickly at the leak. The dodge guy recomended rubbing some black rtv around the new oring to make sure it seated and filled all voids when the pump was repalced... so far that has worked.. been a year now and no coolant loss... weird huh..

Briguy,
I never really thought about the gasket that way, but that makes sense. I had a Dodge Neon that had a head gasket leak. Only thing it did was drip oil all over the place. I got it replaced before it got worse.

Gsxr1100,
That's the price quoted at Bobstheoilguy.com in their ad. What is OAI and how do their reports compare to Blackstone? The sample reports I saw interpreted the results for the client, which was very helpful.

Soundguy,
I hope it is a small leak somewhere that quickly evaporates. For the first 40k I had the truck I would get a whif of antifreeze at startup. So what that means I don't know. I didn't think it was a good thing, hence the two visits to the dealer where they pressure tested the system and pronounced it o.k.

BTW, I don't care if someone hijacks "my" thread at all. It's all good. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I would use http://www.oaitesting.com/ for that price. It is way cheaper then Blackstone. Reports are just what they give you; a little about any wear rates etc. They do not go as far as Blackstone with the “educated guesses” but you do not need what someone’s opinion is. You know what are like. They do however give you all the info you need on the back of the report. What each metal is and where it is from, viscosity etc. I would take that over Blackstone any day.

Soundguy,
The thermostat housings on Magnums leak quite frequently. Mine leaked from day 1. I fixed it when I installed the 165 stat. hasn't leaked sense.

Soundguy- I like your idea and am thinking about doing some oil "flushing" with the 8N I recently bought. The oil changed to pretty dark soon after I changed it. My question to you is "how do you know when it's clean?"

( It normally runs 145 max. Having no other choice, I limped back to the ramp at idle, shutting down periodically as the alarm sounded and the temp spiked over 200. I made it, but was very concerned. I actually had to pull the thermostat, as backflushing didn't help. I also drained the oil, which was VERY dark, unlike the last change where it came out looking like it did when I put it in. )
I think it would be a good idea to change out that new oil sooner than you normally would considering that a lot of that overheated oil may contaminate your new oil. Once should be enough and it couldn't hurt. John
