I might have missed the technical term. But when an unknowing person goes into Home Depot or wherever and buys one, they think they are buying a quality Deere product??? So Deere has actually reduced their quality down to this level on their own??? Amazing.

Pretty much the reason we got a 7K Kubota diesel G2160 8 years ago as the big box mowers were going to crap and I would be on number 2 lawn mower at $1500- $1800 a piece and only thing done to the Kubota is fluids, blades and PTO clutch belt. When they changed to a new model a couple years back they took all the metal out of the control column/dash unit and that was the last step before junk.

You get what you pay for and some companies give you a lot of value but the big corporate giants just do not.

What motivation is there for Deere to brand those junk throw away riding mowers sold at the box stores??

Local ACE Hardware store owner explained this type of product to me the other day. He said research a few years ago showed over 30% of the owners of new riding mowers move within 5 years and don't take their mower with them. They sell it and buy another one. Realizing this, manufacturers a few years ago started making lower cost products that last around 5 years.

The average home owners must not mow very much. I have had my Dixie chopper which was bought new less than 5 years and it has 900 hours. It hasn't been the only mower and probably only about 50 percent of the use. The mowing conditions have changed, and it now gets about 85 percent. How would you come out ahead buying such a mower. I cut the average small yard for $30. That's 50 mowings to break even assuming the mower cost $1,500. I also string trim and blow off the driveway for that price. You are going to need additional equipment to do that. We still haven't figured in operating cost such as fuel, break downs, and regular maintenance. We still haven't factored in the time you spent mowing 50 times.

There is a vast difference in selling a branded lawn mower for $1500 and a branded wet/dry vac for $25.00. That difference comes in 2 things:

1. That $1500 jd mower produces a real and considerable profit for the manufacturer . . . its 100s of dollars of profit. The $25.00 wet dry vac profit is visible only under a microscope if it could even be found.

2. When JD sells their consumer mowers . . they get a chance to gain a "starting" jd customer who will likely purchase another jd product again just because he can say he has a jd lawnmower. Jd makes $100s of dollars of profit the 1st time and every time plus the potential for an up sale product later too which is even greater profit amounts. But what do you go to from a $25 wet dry vac to make kubota any money???

Or if he uses the lawnmower for more than about 50 hours when it breaks, then he realizes that JD homeowner stuff sucks. Although not very much Kubota is obviously making money off the wet dry vacs.

Mine has more than 50 hours, and it is still working fine. But from what I have been led to believe, if I could get 300 hours, that is about the maximum life out of those stinking "tough torque" transmissions. I doubt mine will even last that long, as I have a lot of hills. The rest of the mower seems to be fairly well made, as little consumer mowers go. I bought mine at a real JD dealership, but as near as I can tell, they are exactly the same as the ones you get at Lowes. I have compared them, and they are identical. It has been some time ago when I bought it, and yes I thought, well, it IS a JD, maybe it will last a bit longer than the usual MTD machine. Then I found out on TBN about the transmissions.

Mercedes does the same thing. Offers Lower classes of cars that take advantage of their brand appeal and sell to a larger market. A market that (as I heard) get treated not quite as well as the big spenders at the dealerships.

I'm surprised that the vacs are THAT cheap. I only had to volunteer at a Habitat For Humanity RESTORE that got truckloads of return merchandise from Home Depot to get a sense that the landed cost of all this chinese product must be extremely low. It totally changed my view of consumer product valuation, forever!
