Want a new laptop but do I want Windows 8?

I spent 15 years in the building trades as a carpenter and contractor. I rebuilt the engines and/or transmissions in the first half dozen cars I owned. I think I qualify as technically inclined. I prefer a mac for the same reason I prefer a Model 77 wormdrive, it does what it is supposed to do day after day with no drama. I spend my time working with it instead of on it. Not caring to become proficient with Windows is not a character flaw.

I see what you are saying, but just like some people like doing performance mods or customizibg their cars, some like to do it to their computers. Tuners and hot-rodders avoid cars that make this difficult/impossible. Some just want to get into their car and drive... something for everyone out there.

The real issue is games, if you want to play games get a PC, if you want a computer get a Mac. Funny how thing change, remember hearing something like that a few years ago. Lol. HS

Because games usually require the utmost in computing power and like the gentleman said, if you don't have that, run down to Best Buy and get the parts you need. I also like the analogy about modifying cars. What if you couldn't modify your tractor?

The thing about mac is that it would not let a piece of software out that would require a different video card. Its that simple (or complicated).

But, if you own a mac pro (tower) just like a PC you can change out most of the hardware except for the CPU itself. Now there are hacks for CPU upgrades, but it is not easy like a PC.

As for laptops, it is what it is, about the only thing you can upgrade anymore is the hard drive. Actually this is an interesting point, not sure where the PC laptop market is on this issue, but my 2012 Retina the only thing owner reparable is the hard drive. RAM is soldered to the board, and the real killer is the battery is molded and glued to the case, you cannot replace it on your own at this time.

just a question here. but with a mac. what if you suddenly bought software that wanted a different video card. on a pc desktop you just run to best buy.. pay the 60$ and come home and swap it.

If you play games get a Xbox or a Playstation. But I agree, PC's are much more game friendly and such a larger variety are available.

Nope. Been around too long to get infuriated about anything, especially a forum topic.

Computer technology doesn't belong to any person or company. Any time a company tries to control or prevent entrepreneurs from entering the game, it stifles the very thing that brought the technology into existence in the first place. Technology thrives in an open environment. There's nothing open about Apple.

my comment was more geard to game ports.. ie.. some games like some of the newest chipsets. without it = poor or NO performance.

I know my older HP had a socketable video module and you had choices of upgrades over basic... choice of 2 different processors too. athlon or pentiumM etc.. cd/dvd option as well as them old pcmcia cards. remember those?

my netbooks have socketed memory, hdd, and battery slides out. the older netbook has ( HAD) an upgrade option for bluetooth internally.. etc.
