Want a new laptop but do I want Windows 8?

Got me a new laptop with win8, sure wish it had win7. I dislike win8 so far. First thing it did (unknown to me) was upload 90 updates, which used about half my monthly internet limit, unfortunately my 2nd half. I then took advantange of my after midnight free download period to upgrade to 8.1 just so I can boot to a desktop. The new WMP won't play MPEG files. I'm currently looking at ordering win7 for it.

yep. shipping a product that immediately needs a HUGE OS upgrade was a pretty stinky move on MS part..

I'm not really standing up for Microsoft but let's get our P's and Q's a little better understood.

Windows 8 has been out over a year.

Windows 8.1 is an optional update.

Microsoft is not in the computer manufacturing business.

The various computer manufacturers over produced for the market that purchased computers with windows 8 primarily
because people were still satisfied with windows 7 and because of the bad rap given W-8 just because it was a bit different.

The computer retailers could have pulled all the left over inventory of W-8 units, sent them back to the OEM and had installed W 8.1, repackaged them in new boxes with new instructions but at what cost addition to the units when they went back on the market compared to a purchaser downloading
and installing W 8.1 free as an option if they elected to do so.

What product would have been left on the shelves for quick order from online retailers or brick and mortar stores.

Operating systems are never up to date since there is always a time lag between manufacture and setting up the equipment for use by the purchaser.

I really didn't enjoy going through the updating either, primarily because of my hughesnet daily allotment, but that is not Microsoft's fault.

I could have waited until a later time to purchase a new pc with 8.1 already installed but in my case I had my head in the sand, or somewhere else, and wasn't aware of the 8.1 being scheduled for release just a week after my purchase. Also not Microsoft's fault.

As far as WMP not playing MPEG, if you are talking about MP4 downloaded from you tube as a flash, that is not quite the case either.
Most of the flash MP4 files are actually a DASH format which is in 2 pieces. The downloader/converter must put these files together as a MP4. Some do some don't.

My wife has been using the W8.1 system since I installed it, really likes it, and finds it easy to use.

Hi all

I just had to get a new latop this month. Last one lasted me several years. The keys are crapping out though. I ordered a new Dell Latitude with 16 GB ram and a SSD. In the US you can get Ubuntu, Win7 or Win8 preinstalled - here in Oz we just get Win7 or Win8 and no choice to get neither (that itself is problematic). So I got Win7, looked at it, reformatted and put on the latest Debian. What's really nice is that I don't spend ages with CDs reinstalling Windows software or buying it over again. When I need a piece of software I just select it to install and do something else while it downloads and mostly configures itself.

Windows 8 is not selling like MS hoped. Many businesses are staying put with Win7 and even XP. The Chinese Govt has said they will stay with Win XP which is very interesting. MS have said there will be no more security updates for it. Perhaps the Chinese think they have a bit of clout :)

You can turn off automatic updates. If you want Win8 to look like WinXP/Win7, install Start8 (click here) or install Win 8.1 and select the old start menu in the Control Panel. Once retailers run out of current Win7 stock, you will not be able to buy Win7, so you better hurry.

See first response.

They are with the Surface line of tablets.

Any business who wants Microsoft support, at a reasonable price, will not be sticking with WinXP since it goes unsupported next year.

As long as there has been Windows, this has been Micrsoft's model, i.e., frequent patching which means, as several posters have discovered, a lengthy update process after buying a new Windows PC, unless you buy one right after a new os is announced. No offense, but complaining about it is like complaining about the weather. :)

As our Aussie member mentioned, there are alternatives and if you are not into using a *nix variant that's not all that mainstream, buy an Apple desktop or laptop. Microsoft has a Mac version of Office and almost any Windows app has an OSX version.

.

i was thinking more of the surface I have. it says microsoft on it? i assume they make it ( brand it..e tc. )

and it needed a huge amount of updates, including 2 firmware updates, and os upgrade PLUS it needed it's built in apps updated. office was the preview edition that then required a 538mb to go to full edition.. free mind you...

Unfortunately you can't even upgrade to 8.1 until you do the updates, it wouldn't show up in the store to get it.
MS needs to realize there is still a market for desktops, not everyone is going to a tablet, or wants a touchscreen. Maybe the lack of win8 sales will wake them up? Looks like 7 will be around awhile. My workplace just upgraded from xp to win7.
Got most of my apps loaded on 8.1 now. still have to look at the mpeg codec thing. I have a way of playing them with other apps, just not WMP.
