It all depends where you look.

Over 200 kids in the county associated with various churches living a week at the local high school and middle school doing volunteer work on local homes in need, donating the entire week to working for others.

We all gripe that the next generation is going to ruin us, which it seems that every previous generation has commented on per the next generation.

Ironically enough, church service every night in the high school gym.

This is something the county churches has been doing every two years for some time now.

That is a heart warming story.

But to answer your question

  • fatherless homes
  • these kids came from churches, all kids should be taken to church
  • parents on dope, lack of parenting
  • systemic welfare/poverty enabled by gov't

I could go on, but its early, trying to wake up.

There is a lot more kindness all around us than what you see in the media.

I see good things happening around me every day.

And I see people of all ages, races and religions, and politics getting along just fine every day.

Completely agree.

Bad news sells, good news does not.

My contribution was working in the kitchen on our churches designated days for dinner and breakfast for close to 500 people at the school (hey, being there at 0400 for breakfast wasn't fun LOL). Saw my boys old high school principal along with some other teachers.

Just as kids today get a bad rap, I honestly can say I have the highest regard for our local teachers and what they're stuck from the state to work with. Most actually care about the kids and go out of there way to help.

My wife has a lot more time off from work than myself, so she stayed at the high school 24/7 and worked on a crew. There is one teacher locally who made the news for being suspended for the way he disciplined a kid (lets just say he didn't look good in the news). He was the lead in the crew and my wife said he was a great guy in dealing with the kids and gave her a whole new perspective on what the man is really like other than reading news stories.

Agree. It's easy for us old geezers to look at cultural/generational differences and get into "kids these days" mode, but it's sometimes easy to forget that older generations said the same about us. I'd say the proportion of good to bad/useless kids is about the same as it always was.

Our boys went to church, but neither were wanting to partake in this event when there. We didn't force them if they didn't want to.

My wife had to deal with a girl who was forced to go this year. It really wasn't fun for the girl nor my wife who had to keep tabs on here while at the school when not working on a job.

Not saying church is the be all end all, but it hopefully plants seeds on fertile soil.

Everyone at my church is a sinner.

Kids have so many stages in life, and at this age, they have what they think, are their main interests. Just like adults, many don't want to be there, some will lift and help, some will stand around for the picture taking credit.

Very impressed with our new 20 something RN's...

Maybe it's the nature of those choosing nursing?

As for service oriented it does seem we had more options back in the day.

Scouting is almost non existent here now but there was a time we had many local troops and community service was a big part...

Schools also had more opportunities for community helping as did churches... fewer churches now.

One of the local churches had decades of helping and a lot revolved around the church kitchen... 3 years back a random fire inspection closed the kitchen...

Fire inspector determined the kitchen all built to code with concrete floor and walls required a 40k full fire suppression system... it was beyond anything the small church could afford plus recommendation on table for fire sprinklers in the hall which would trigger bathroom ADA code...

Never an issue and I spent a lot of times helping out in that kitchen...

Plenty of fire extinguishers in a large open well laid out kitchen of concrete construction...

Is it possibly the opposite?

Imaging being in your early years, just joining the work force. You start earning some pay, and paying taxes. You get a raise, your pay goes up a little-- and your taxes shoot up far faster than the pay.

Then you contemplate the generation who preceded you left $35 trillion in debt that needs to be repaid. You who are stuck with that obligation. No way out.

$35 trillion today-- and a lot more tomorrow.

I watched a number od D Day shows the past couple of days. Those kids (the greatest generation) grew up and had families. They probably passed on the knowledge and responsibility they saw during the war. They probably instilled in their children the ethics and responsibility they learned. Those kids the Baby Boomers (like me) lost some of that and our kids grew up in the expanding world of computers and social media whiz dulled their sense of responsibility.

So here we are.
