Below: Not sure if you can see the electrical wiring in the background of this photo on the short white post.
The previous person who mowed this field hit it, and knocked out a 20” gas main buried underneath. It happened about 15 years ago, and was the reason I took over mowing this field.

The rusted steel pip in the foreground is something i have to remember each year to avoid.

When I croak, some poor sumbiatch is going to take over mowing here and I am probably the only person on earth who knows exactly where these are.

Lord help them. Maybe I’ll make some kind of taller warning stick and paint it orange….

Below:
Here’s an iron marker left over next to one of our gazillion miles of abandoned RR tracks here in “coastal” PA.
I know it’s there, so no worries for me. But if you didn’t know it was there, it would total out a farm tractor.

Iffin' it were me, even knowing where everything is, I think I'd still be putting a marker of some kind on it. I've got a good memory but it's kinda short, one moment of inattention....

Years ago, shortly after I bought my property, My neighbor and I bought a Ford 9N tractor together. It was a 1939 model, so first year of production. In my ignorance of tractors I thought it was a late 50s or early 60s made machine. It was in very good shape and it came with a 5 foot Bush Hog that was pretty beat up. My neighbor found a job for us to use the Bush Hog, a 5 acre field full of Scotch Broom. We thought we could make a little money to offset the purchase price of the tractor. We had no idea that Bush Hogging Scotch Broom was akin to Bush Hogging steel cable. It beat the crap out of our new purchase and the Bush Hog. I did a lot of weld repairs to the deck of that Bush Hog. It was a great learning experience. That old 1939 Ford really did a great job considering its age, low horsepower, and inexperienced operators. The Bush Hog ended up having the gearbox welded to the frame of the mower as it was breaking out. I added lots of angle iron to reinforce the thing. And a couple pounds of welding rod. I will never again attempt to mow down Scotch Broom. I will leave that to the experts.

Why give away “value” that I have? If nobody else knows where the deadly obstacles are than me, there’s more reason to keep me around ;)
