Hi Guys

I live in France but have a whirlpool American washing machine and I am wanting to know what size thread the pipes are, as they are different to the French fittings and I need to sort out some kind of converter.

I believe they all use a standard garden hose thread, Not sure what the technical thread call out is.

The threads (the main US standard is known as GHT - "garden hose thread"- it has an outer diameter of 1.0625 inches (26.988 mm) and a pitch of 11.5 tpi) . Small rubber or plastic seals are used in female ends to prevent leakage. GHT is not compatible with UK hose systems which use 3/4 in, 14 tpi, BSP.
We generally just say that it is 3/4" x12tpi.
I am assuming you are talking about the hot and cold water hook up on the back of the machine.

Thanks for the replies, I have now tracked down some plastic adaptor pieces for £35.00 which seems a bit expensive but the machine is no good without water, so I have to order them.

Do they use hoses to hook them up in France? Or do they hard pipe them?

If they use hoses, you could get clamp-on ends for a couple bucks each. Get a local hose, cut one end off, and clamp a US end on. Can you order stuff from the US? They have them on Amazon.com for less than three bucks an end. What you're searching for is called a "female garden hose end repair."

The garden hose is the same in USA as in the part of Germany where I was staying.

One thing to note... most European Washers are piped for cold water and the washer heats the water as necessary.

To get the full use of your American machine you will need a supply of hot and cold water and 120V 60 Hz power which means you will also need a properly sized converter...

If it's anything like the Whirlpool we have, you're better off donating it to the French military for a target, and buying an old fashioned washboard...

Our 10 year old Roper washing machine just gave it up...It was cheap 10 years ago...Name brands just ain't what they used to be.

We ended up buying a washer and dryer--front loaders from LG...So far so good, uses very little water and the clothes come out of the washer almost dry. The auto feature on the dryer shuts off when the stuff is dry...Just have to see if this stuff saves me on electric, who knows? For $2,000 they better do something.

Have you seen some of the new top loader advertisements... same water usage as the front loaders without the back ache of stooping over?

My Kenmore paid is avocado... Dryer is 1968 and Washer 1982...

I guess I'm on borrowed time... just can't see spending more on a Washer/Dryer than I did for my last Truck...

With the stands (a complete ripoff, $250 ea) there isn't much bending over.

I looked at some of the top loaders, but was warned off of them. The price really wasn't materially different....Full disclosure: I have no idea what I'm talking about when it comes to domestic appliances, my limited knowledge is confined to garage tools.

You've been lucky with those machines, I'm in my early 40's and this is my 3rd set of w/d:confused:.

In the end, this is what the wife wanted...Need anymore be said?:D
