Watch for bears!

It's a sad story. Folks going out into the wild - unprepared. Eighteen years in Alaska and in bear country. Never once had any problems. We ALWAYS let the bears know we were there. None of this "quietly sneaking around" to get a better look at the wildlife.

Sad. I hate when public officials use the term “out of an abundance of caution” when justifying killing the bears.

In Colorado (or anywhere in the US) has there ever been a bear attack where a human is killed where the bear isn’t also put down?

We love hiking in National Parks. Have to be careful of bears. We make lots of noise. Maybe that is just an old tale but so far so good.

MoKelly,

A bear that kills a human will likely do it again unless it was related to defense of young. Most are afraid of us and that is what keeps us safe, but some are wired differently and will see us as food. We either kill these bears, completely stay out of their territory, or let them kill us.

Noise is good for the ones that are scared of us. For the man killers....you are just telling them where you are. Bear spray, dogs, firearms are all good to have with you. We usually have all 3. Not out of fear, but being prepared.

I always wonder how well the bells work. My last dog wore one in springtime, to warn all of the various wildlife mothers that she was around. One day we were walking down a winter road when a sow bear ran out of the ditch about 25 feet in front of us... luckily going in the other direction. A female of any species is nothing to trifle with when there are babies involved...apparently that wasn't the case as here were
signs of consumption on the body
