Watch where you\'re mowing!

We brought this up at lunch yesterday--

What is the most interesting thing you have found while mowing?

When we bought our property, the grass was overgrown, and there's several things I found with the rough cut mower that I didn't find when I walked the property.

I ran over an old car battery, and I found an old acetheylene tank, a push mower, a couple tires, and a wheelbarrow. The car battery was the only thing I actually ran over though! NOT a pretty sight! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Now it's your turn... /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

It was pretty much dry. It probably already seeped into the ground or something. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Re: Watch where you\'re mowing!

The only thing ivE got was toys from neibors dog, balls, bones they make a racket thogh, and rubber pull toys. itS amazing what you can hide in 3" off turf. you walk lawn for an hour and not find it till you turn on the pto, then it'll find you. oh ya on the farm iv'e got a few birds, snakes, and wood chucks in the mower-conditioner,and or baler. its aucctualy funny what you find in the feed trough that the cows won't eat.

Re: Watch where you\'re mowing!

Lets see, hog panels, barb wire, field wire, tires, rocks and steel bars. The largest thing was a 40 ft. steel building truss with 6 ft legs.

Re: Watch where you\'re mowing!

Well I have had same problem:

so far I've found 2 logging chains, (3/8" by about 40 feet that made one heck of a racket) found a 3/8" x 10" chain attached to a 3" x 36" pipe that I think was used for 3pt spreader bar. both of which were found with my finish mower, and my rider respectivly. other items have been tons of rocks, car rims and tires in heavy brush. the worst thing was a telliphone pole which was used to stabalize the creek bank. I found it when pushing multifloral rose with my FEL. as my front tire came up to the creek edge I dropped the fel over the edge pushing as I went,, hit the brakes and the hole bank rolled with me & the tractor down to the bottom of the creek, (about 3') luckly I had my rototiller on back and the center harrow tang gouged into the bank and kept the tractor from going over on it's side... the POLE was burried back far enough to HIDE the fact it was there... so anyhow I had a pile of yuck and a 14" pole under the center of my CUT JINMA. it wouldn't go BACK with the tiller and 3pt wedged up aginst the seat back. and so forward was only place to go. I had to shovel by hand soem rocks under the tires as the green rose was 0 traction and I had a pile about 10' high in fornt of me with dirt rocks ect in there. I did get it out on it's own power but it took me about 1.5hrs of messing around. anyhow that was the higest pucker factor I've had on my tractor experiance since i was 12 yrs old and nearly ran myself over with a 9n when my pant leg caught the shifter as I was getting off. it ran into a BRAND NEW steel silo but only SKUFFED the silo side. and the concrete base twisted the wheel over pretty good as well as the FEL bent sideways a bit.

needless to say I was scared then bad too! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Re: Watch where you\'re mowing!

I fortunately backdrag my loader over higher stuff before using the mower and I have found many things strange, but comes to mind 3 car engine heads, 2 manifolds, and a 6x12 ft. gate that was lying flat covered up. The bucket generally will catch at least a little and let me know something is there. John

Probably scared from the accident for about 30 seconds, and then scared for three days about what your dad was gonna do to you when he saw the tractor and silo /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Re: Watch where you\'re mowing!

Almost backed over a fawn with the rotory mower a few years ago. Stopped just in time, pulled forward and got off of the tractor and was about to pick it up and put it in the woods. Thats when it got up and ran in on its own. Sure would have made a mess if I hit it! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Re: Watch where you\'re mowing!

When I first moved on to my 55 acres, I found (while bush hogging) a 55 gallon drum (empty, thank goodness), a toilet (once again, empty, thank goodness), a disassembled 1962 Dodge D100 pickup (not complete), two freezers, and too many tires to count.
