Watcha eating?

/ Watcha eating? #842
I was raised and lived for years within an hour of the Outer Banks. The Hatteras and Ocrakoke old timers and some in the 50-60 year old range still speak that way, but it's dying quickly. One salesman at a Ford dealership, called everyone mate, and his accent was thick, he was a Midgette. I had good friends Kenny Smith and Gary Scarborough, they were "high tiders" as well. I was good friends with several of the Danial's boys of Danial's Seafood in my teens. They own about 8-10 restaurants and fishing fleet, in Wanchese. They were high tiders as well, but that is not very prevalent now as 80% of current residents are from somewhere else.

My FIL was raised at the other end of the OBX down towards Wilmington but he has a "normal" NC accent. I saw a headline this week that said that Raleigh has lost its accent because of all of the out of state arrivals. I think they meant Yankees. :D:D:D

I saw a story on the new years ago about a Mexican working for a farmer Down East. The farmer did not have kids and my impression was that the Mexican was adopted by the farmer. The Mexican was no longer a Mexican though and he had pretty much became an American with an accent that was completely from Down East. It was funny to listen to the Farmer and his hired help since they spoke with the same accent. Its not often that a first generation looses their accent but this guy surely did.

As people move around more and mass media brings in accents from all over the states, but primarily a Midwestern accent, the local accents are going to go away I am afraid...

I think you are right. Saying ClOrox does sound better than Clorox. Just seems right somehow.:laughing::laughing:

Same question. Total or LDL. And if total what was your LDL? May want to clarify with your Dr.

Ice cold watermelon! Hey, it's hot here!
And Whipper just laid in her water bowl - it's a Texas size bowl.

POleece is the proper pronunciation in NC.:laughing::laughing:

You can hear that pronunciation on Andy Griffith! :D:D:D

In the cafeteria today and Monday they had tacos which are excellent. They only have tacos once a month but they are awesome. I usually eat peanuts and dried fruit at my desk but I treat myself when it is Taco Day! :licking::licking::licking: The price is right too!

Will do and am looking for that now. I recall the good being up and the bad being down and where I wanted them to be. I am eating near zero saturated fat and would like to say zero but am hedging. Haven't eaten red meat in a year but baked fish several times a week and a half chicken breast every other week.

6dogs, I was just reiterating your question to M. E. Race. I'm betting the Dr. wanted to get his LDL from the normal peoples LDL<100 lowered to the high risk group of LDL<70. I was curious where his Dr. came up with the 85 number. Most Cardiologist really only care about the LDL because the HDL is like a garbage truck and will be higher as it takes out the trash and if there is no trash to take out it will be lower. Higher is usually considered better by some people which is more correct but not entirely correct because of the formula's calculation for total cholesterol. The other number figured in the total cholesterol is the triglycerides which is excess fuel for your body to make cholesterol.

For The total cholesterol add you HDL and LDL and 1/5 of the triglycerides.

My question before had been if the HDL is "good" why is it added to the "bad" cholesterol number instead of subtracted. That's where the garbage truck analogy works and why Dr.s are not too concerned if you have a high total cholesterol# made high by the HDL#.

Had farm fresh scrambled eggs with chives growing just off the porch and cut a few minutes before being tossed into the eggs. Toast from home made whole wheat grain and rye bread along with a pot of coffee. :licking::licking::licking:

Danged coffee pot is dying and the reviews on new coffee makers are not so good. I swear I am just going to buy a big funnel to hold the coffee basket and grounds then pour hot water to make my own coffee. We have a Cuisinart drip coffee maker that has to be at least 10 years old but the on button ain't turning on.

I recommend a Bunn; they're a hundred bucks or so, but they make a pot of coffee in about 3 or 4 minutes and they will last 4 or 5 years.

Our current coffee maker was expensive, about $150ish but it is at least 10 years old. I bought this machine because it had a SS pot not glass. The machine I had previously had a glass pot which I broke and figured a SS pot would last a life time while I would break another glass pot. I noticed when shopping that the SS replacement pots, why would you need one?, were around $40-50. Ironically, I just spent some time cleaning the old machine to make it shinny and then the On button decided to have issues. I was using my parents ancient percolator over XMAS and that thing still works and I would hate to think how old it is... At least 40-50 years old. Worked just fine and the coffee tasted good to me though I am sure it was not brewed at the just right temperature for X number of minutes.:laughing::laughing:

I was looking at one of the Bunn models.... Hmmmm... That does not sound quite right somehow... Must just be me...

Any who, Cooks Illustrated just had a review of coffee makers. The one they like the best was $300. There there was one a bit cheaper and the Bunn. Reading the comments on Amazon was shocking because there were so many bad reviews for all of the coffee makers I read about. The recommended Bunn model, hmmmm, has a large number of reported failures and the magazine even admitted there were problems though they did not have any. The reviews of the Bunn models reported excellent customer service, hmmmm, again that sound wrong on a few levels... Anyway, who wants to have multiple failures with their Bunn? :confused3: How hard is it to heat water and pour it over coffee grounds? We can send men to the moon but it takes $300 to get a good cup of coffee? The $300 machine was hand built in Denmark and the reported problems seem to be user issues. The rest of the models were made in China... Hmmmmm.....

I ordered a six inch funnel and a 32 ounce Pyrex measuring cup on Amazon to arrive Friday. Not quite $20, I had about $15 worth of credits, so it cost me $5.:laughing::laughing::laughing: I need both of these items anyway and if I can't fix the current coffee maker I will figure out how many seconds it takes to heat the amount of water I need in the microwave to 200 degrees, put the coffee grounds basket in the funnel, with the funnel in the coffee pot and I will POUR the danged hot water.

Good gracious. $300 for a coffee maker that works....

Even the danged hot water kettles were expensive and had problems....

Dan

No matter what time of day or night, when you walk into true cajun home the first question will be, what do you take in your coffee? It can be 98 swinging degrees outside and they will offer you a cup of coffee. The wife has a collection of old drip coffee pots that have been handed down from past generations. They come in handy during hurrican season when the fancy electric machine is just useless. Fresh ground beans and as close to boiling as you can determine, pour it in the top and pour a perfect cup out of a 100 year old pot that might have cost $2. when new.

Dripolaters make the best coffee, whether they be a $5 aluminum unit from Montomery Ward or my fancy . No other method keeps the coffee a pur tasting.

My favorite coffee pot for now is a Cuisinart SS, glass carafe timer unit with one of the cone style filters. It has a charcoal filter in the unit, but it tasted way better with my well water at home vs. city water at my bud's house.

I grind my own custom blends, typically 85-90% french roast and the rest vanilla. I grind it just a tad coarser than espresso.

As for food, lately I've really only been eating twice a day and my most common meal this week has been 3 farm fresh eggs from my place, some chopped andoille or other rope sausage, and a sprinkling of sharp cheddar. Last night I had Grandma Utz BBQ potato chips on the side and a cold beer.

It is pretty darned good bachelor food.

Be well,
David

NO! you are not getting away with saying that. That is awful food full of fat, cholesterol and carnitine. It is heart attack food and since your mother and your wife are not there to tell you, I am. EAT MORE VEGGIES!!!! You need the nutrition to help you through this.
