Update: Liberty pump says my pump is actually a 1/2 HP sewage pump, NOT a grinder, (cutter), as I was led to believe by the plumber who installed it. They told me because of the age of the pump, aprox. 15+ years, it could be slow start capacitor in the pump or defective dry contact float ball mechanism. Because the application is not everyday use, I've probably gotten more than usual life from the entire setup. I can test either the float or the pump, but I can also install an optional alarm, which would warn of no start or similar problem, thus warning to not add more water to the basin, allowing time to shut down and effect needed repairs if a similar situation were to occur in future.
I will add the alarm, and test both components to see if I can pinpoint the problem.
Thanks to all who replied to this thread. I hope it helps others. I suggest installing the optional alarm at time of original install to prevent floor damage from flooding.
