I will be running about 250' of pipe from a well to my cabin. What size pipe would you suggest in order to get acceptable water pressure?

Pumps generally have a 1 1/4" thread but for 250' 1" would work well.

A lot would depend on what size pump you have , how deep is the well. Also will the pressure tank be at the well or at the cabin. If it was mine I would run at least a 1 1/2" line and set the pressure tank at the cabin and if it is a small pump(3 hp) or less I would set the pressure switch at 40# "on" and 60# off. That would give you all of the pressure you would need for the cabin.

I agree , I ran about 200 ft of 1 inch to a 3 BR trailer we set up for visitors and our 8 children and gchildren when visiting. I used a subsoiler and ran it 5 or 6 times then put a 1 inch cap on the pipe and tied it to the foot of the subsoiler , don't lift the subsoiler out of the ground until to end of line.
Ps I have a 2 hp pump set at 50 & 35 psi, more than enough pressure at the trailer.

Is there any elevation difference between the well and the cabin???

I don't know what your frost line is but I would put it at least 18" deep. That will keep it under the gophers. We have a lot of gophers down here so I went with 2" PVC and buried it 24" even though our frost line is like 0.5". They generally won't try to eat through a larger pipe. By the way, my run is over 800'. P1=P2. Where you start loosing is rise and angles.

Use at least 1-1/4" pipe and 1-1/2" is far better.

In many well systems the real limit is not pressure drop in the line, but minimizing erosion of the pipe interior by particulates in the water. Especially at fittings. You have to keep the pipe size large in order to keep the water velocity low.

I ran 300' of 1" poly pipe from my dugout to the house for sprinklers on the lawn. Looking back I really wish I had used 1-1/2" or 2" as the price would have went from $200 up to $250 for the pipe. I can Only efficiently run two sprinklers off of this. Would really like to do more as I am feeding it with a 2" Honda trash pump, so there is no issue of pump capacity.

My very first job was working for a well driller. we did complete systems from well to pump ,tank etc.. As travlitt stated, lots of unknowns here. However, "if" big "if", you have a drilled or dug well, and have a submersible pump in the well, even a 1/2 hp sub will easily give you all the water you will ever need with just a 1'' line. However, you need to remember some basics,, keep the line buried below frost ( maybe not a problem where you live, but definetly is here) we always buried the lines 5' deep and then covered it by hand before we backfilled trench. I would recomend you have your tank in or near the cabin as well as the pump controls.. Lots of other things here but to answer your questions, I would have no issues running a 100psi 1"" poly and I would install a hydrant valve somewhere between cabin and well. This is an outside water source for you that drains below frost level .. Just a thought,, good luck.

I have a cased spring and run 1 1/2" poly pipe the 220 feet to my house. I have a 3/4 hp submersible pump set up in the spring and the pressure tank and pump controls are in the basement of the house. The pump is set at 40/60 and this system provides enough water for full flow out of all faucets etc - all at the same time. My poly water line is buried at 6 feet. This system was installed in 1982 and has provided trouble free service since that time.
