I have been building a new barn and would like to have water at it. There is water at my old barn a couple hundred feet away but that water line has sprung a leak again. It is 3/4 in 100psi plastic coil pipe. The well is 800 feet away at the house. I am thinking about replacing it, as every year it seems to spring a leak in a different location, often when I am not here.
My question is what diameter pipe should be used to have a decent amount of water and pressure at this distance? I tried looking on the web but came up with math formulas that I did not understand.
Should I use Schedule 40 PVC pipe or 200 PSI plastic coil pipe?

Thanks for your help. Rick

Use 3/4" 200 PSI coil pipe and brass fittings at the tie ins, Should solve your problems.

Is there any rise in the line over the 800' run? What is the pressure at the well?

We use 1 1/2 schedule 40 PVC but we are watering cattle and have over a mile of water line. I'm just guessing that 1" would do what you need.

I would also use schedule 40, it comes in 20' lenghts, easy to put in and hook on to.

No expert, but I'd go with 1" Sched 40 over that distance then drop to 3/4 at the barn.

I would use coiled pipe, but would definitely go with 1". BTW, we always bury two pipes in the ground; the cost of extra pipe is nothing compared to having to dig it up to find a leak and repair it. If the first one fails, you just switch over the the "back up" pipe!

Large diameter pipe acts like a pressure tank...it's hard to be too big, but it's real easy to be too little. I'd run 1" or 1-1/4" from the well head to the barns. I have my irrigation system in with 1" PVC Class pipe. It's thinner walled than Sched 40, but seems to be holding up just fine 5 years after install (knock on wood). I wouldn't be afraid to use coil pipe, either, but make it big. It can't be too big. Am I repeating myself? I think the pipe ought to be big. :D

The well is higher. The old barn is 30 feet lower then then the well and then the new barn is beyond the old one and about ten feet higher. The well pressure tank is about 60 psi. Thanks Rick

I have regretted not running a bigger line in the past.

If it is not cost prohibitive, I would rather regret spending the money and using the 1" pipe here, than regret not doing it.

How much water do you have at the well?
What are you doing with the water in the barn?
Livestock?

My parents ran 2" PVC from their well to their barn. They added PVC risers every 40 feet or so with the thoughts of later installing fittings for irrigation, but never did it, and periodically would break off the risers... (driving over them or something) not the best of plans.

However, they have lots of water at the barn. They use a 1" firehose to wash stuff such as washing out horse stalls, or washing down the concrete outside of the stalls. It is nice to have lots of water and lots of pressure.

Are your pipes buried?
Are you irrigating?
Watering plants?
Do you need water elsewhere, near the barn?
How much water at the pump?

I just bought 300 feet of 1 1/4" black poly which I don't think was prohibitively expensive. Is it better to bury poly or PVC?
