Water - Not Antifreeze - In Oil

Have you checked the exhaust manifold gaskets? One of our old 2 cyl JDs had a blown exhaust gasket. anytime it rained we would get quite a bit of water in the oil.

Colorado - Nice thought - no kids. hudr- There's an idea - I replaced the muffler and stack this summer, and when I did, I took off the 90 degree elbow from the exhaust manifold, to make sure I got the right size muffler at NAPA. The gasket looked good, so I just bolted it back up. Guess I should have used some hi-temp silicone gasket sealer, didn't think it was that critical. I suppose rain could drip off the side of the hood to there. Seems like a long shot, but an easy place to start. Hard to believe much water could get in there, though.

Had a similar problem with my old IH 340 utility, getting water in the cylinders, which would in turn get in the oil, when it rained much. I too had a new flapper cap on the stack and also put a can over top. Finally found that where the replacement muffler connected to the exhaust pipe, the muffler went inside the exhaust pipe which let water run down and get in the exhaust manifold.(muffler inlet diameter smaller than exhaust pipe) I bought a cheap adapter and made it where the muffler's inlet went over the upright adapter pipe (muffler inlet larger diameter than exhaust pipe) so the water would not seep in to the manifold. Took me awhile to find it but was a simple fix.

You may also want to check the bottom of that elbow as my old L235 had a drain hole that would plug up quite often,but as far as water getting in my guess would be a faulty gasket or a poor fit around the pipe and muffler as posted above.

Thanks for the ideas, fellas. When I get back to the tractor I'll check for a drain hole in the elbow when I seal the gasket. The muffler and stack were a unit, which was nice, but the inlet dia. and the elbow were the same size, so I had to use an adapter. It goes the proper way to shed water, though. There's another problem spot that I thought I had addressed. The place on the right front of the engine where the tach cable used to come out. (Long gone...) I had wrapped it with tape and secured it with wire. I could do a better seal there, like with the end of a finger of a rubber glove and a hose clamp.
