While visiting a Yanmar dealer, we fired up two of his tractors and both of them shot water out of the exhaust stack. The water is no doubt from rain and was at least sitting in the exhaust or manifold. Does this water make it all the way to the internals of the engine? Is this an absolute kiss of death? Both engines sounded great but I'd be worried about internal corrosion.

Sounds like that dealer needs to invest in some tin cans! The corrosion isn't the killer unless they sit for a very long time. I'd be more worried about water getting in the cylinder. It could be very bad for the engine if the starter could turn a cylinder full of water. Of course, now that I say that, it's unlikely that the starter could do that so maybe it's not a big deal. Still, I wouldn't allow that to happen to my own tractor. Slip a tin can over the exhaust when it sits. That'll give it that old time tractor look too /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Over time the exhaust manifold is gonna rust out, and also, you might get water seepage on the exhaust valves.. depending on how much water sits in there.
Like others have suggested... a tin can over the stack works nicely.
For a more permanent fix, I add flap caps to all my stacks.. looks neat too.

Really depends on the brand and model. Some Mitsubishis and Yanmars have poorly designed manifolds that don’t trap the water or they are in an area in Japan that rains so much that it overwhelms the water trap/drain. Water gets in and sits on top of the valve till it rusts the seats away. Of course condensation is normal even with a cap on, especially if it is continually started and never allowed to fully heat up.
