As far as a "float" valve,, I would never consider such a thing,,
for a float valve to work, tie valve must be open to the atmosphere,, which will allow contamination in to the water,,

Our county preaches about the importance of having the water system sealed,,
the only contaminated home water systems are the open ones.

I had to attend a (highly recommended) meeting to listen to all the failures possible with water systems,,

It is amazing,, about 20% of the homes in our county have contaminated water.

If there is no float valve how does the water get shut off when the tank is full? I would agree that the tank should not be open to the air, but I do plan on putting a chlorinator which is ~$300. as a precaution.

Give us an alternative please?

Then how come every water tower in America is vented to the atmosphere?

How come one method of treating sulfur smell in well water is aeration in a cistern?

As I mentioned in an earlier post, vents need to be filtered so critters dont go in.
But suggesting that water will be unsafe just because it is vented to the atmosphere is not a fair statement.

I guess all the stockmen with float controlled watering troughs are doing it wrong then.
